High school season is right around the corner. Tryouts have been set for the week of August 14th, and league play starting the week of September 4th.
As usual, Prep Dig will be following the action. But until it starts, we will highlight the top players returning in each position.
First up, the top setters from the 6A classification.
Brown, a 2022 Pacific First Team All-League and 6A All-State Honorable Mention recipient, has been a major key player for Sherwood High School over the past three years. The incoming senior ran a 6-2 alongside Olivia Doel for the Athena 17-1 team this past season, where her court vision and ability to place the ball perfectly for her attackers shone through. Brown brings a steady calmness and confidence to the court, and she will undoubtedly continue to bring her team success her senior year while she leads the Bowmans’ offense
As the #2 recruit for the class of 2026, Buerkle was instrumental this club season for her OJVA 15-1 team. The only freshman to make varsity at McDaniel, Buerkle received 2022 PIL Honorable Mention accolades, primarily setting a 6-2 offense. During club, she showed her all-around abilities on the court, including her quick and effective arm swing, and her excellent decision making as a setter. Buerkle’s steady play from anywhere on the court will be instrumental for the high school season.

Burson had a standout season setting for Mountainside, receiving Metro First Team All-League accolades. As one of the Athena 17-2 setters, Burson used her soft touch on the ball and quick footwork to give her attackers well-placed sets all season. Unfortunately, Burson is currently out with a knee injury that will likely affect her play through the start of the high school season, but that won’t stop the recent Greensboro College commit from making an impact once she’s cleared to get back on the court.
After leading the Jesuit Crusaders to a second-place finish in the state as the team’s primary setter and earning Metro First Team All-League and 6A All-State Honorable Mention honors, Carle went into the club season ready to compete. She played the bulk of the club season running a fast-paced 6-2 opposite Kamden Mitchell for the OJVA 16-1 team, but used her excellent defensive skills to take on the role of libero during Regionals. With that top notch defense and quick offensive play, Carle is well-prepared to lead Jesuit this fall.

Her steadiness in all aspects on the court, and especially in her ability to put the ball away from the right consistently, led DeTrant to receive Central Valley Second Team All-League accolades. This past club season, DeTrant ran a 5-1 on the highly successful NPJ 17-1 team, showing her ability to effectively lead a quick, hard-to-beat offense. Entering her senior year, DeTrant will be a key player for McNary.
