Prep Dig will be following the action closely and every match I get to attend will be followed with a Top Performers Report, highlighting the prospects who stood out on the court, and a photo gallery.
This season, we’re trying to follow the great private schools from the Houston area a little bit closer and on Tuesday, September 19, I was in Sugar Land to watch the exciting TAPPS duel between the Fort Bend Christian Academy Eagles and the Lutheran South Pioneers.
Both teams entered their fifth match of district play undefeated, but only the Eagles continued this way as they swept (25-23, 25-14, 25-19) Lutheran South to get to 5-0 in district play and 22-3 for the season. The Pioneers now have a 4-1 win record in district and stand at 27-8 for the season.
Top Performers
Fort Bend Christian’s athletic middle was nearly unstoppable at the net, having no issues scoring points and siding out with great efficiency. She got 14 sets (just the fourth most in the team) and sent nine of them (the highest mark in the squad) straight down, hitting at an impressive 64.3% efficiency rate and ending the match with zero errors. Minor was also a major factor with her blocking as, besides getting three stuffs, she also created all sorts of issues for opposing hitters with her ability to move quickly to both pins and her tremendous leaping and very aggressive moves above the net.
Daniela Ramirez
Daniela Ramirez
The electric Ramirez put on an excellent shift for the Eagles, strongly contributing to their dominant performance against Lutheran South. She handled her backcourt duties extremely well alongside outside hitter Layne Bulow Layne Bulow 5’10” | DS/L Fort Bend Christian Academy | 2025 State TX and kept the team in system during the entire match, besides generating several transition opportunities – she was particularly good at getting to tips from her left back position. Ramirez led Fort Bend Christian in digs (ten) and aces (five) and ranked second in passes (11). She had a strong serving run at the start of set one that proved instrumental for the team to start ahead.
Moved to the middle in her first season with Fort Bend Christian, Morton looks better adapted to the new position every time she gets on the court. Her blocking has been improving exponentially and she got a match-high six stuffs against Lutheran South thanks to her excellent reading and athletic tools – Morton was very dominant in 50-50 plays and when dealing with overpasses. She was also efficient offensively, getting six kills, and her offensive versatility proved to be very important to the team as she swung from the left in one rotation.
Highlights
Playing just the three net rotations, Ochelli has quietly put on a solid performance against Lutheran South, contributing on both sides of the ball at right side for Fort Bend Christian. She was set just 12 times (the least among the five starting hitters), but put seven of those attempts down, some of which were out of system, to end long rallies, reaching a solid 58.3% efficiency rate. Ochelli also got a couple of blocks and put a lot of pressure on opposing outside hitters, who tried to avoid her at the net. She also made an impressive dig at the start of set three and did well with her ball control in general.
Highlights
Aniston Collins
Aniston Collins
Playing a dual role of setter/right side, Collins had a challenging night, as she had to produce on both roles, but performed well, remaining consistent throughout the match. With most of Lutheran South’s hitters having trouble scoring, she had to adjust her game plan on the fly and made good decisions, often getting them in good positions to swing. She was also quite effective offensively as well, using her skills and vision to score at a decent rate from the right and the left. Collins also had some good moments with her serving.
Lutheran South’s top scorer and most talented player couldn’t carry her team to victory, but had a solid performance in a night in which she was extremely demanded. With most hitters struggling and the team’s passing fairly inconsistent, Musgrove was set a lot (and not always in system) and had good moments using power or vision to score in difficult plays. She also tried to do the best she could to generate good scoring opportunities for her hitters when setting, but couldn’t find an answer to Fort Bend Christian’s strong blocking and defense. Musgrove also played excellent defense herself and kept her team in the game with her play.
