The event reunited eight teams from the region in each of the 17s and 18s divisions at the Open Court Sports Complex, in Katy, and some of the very top prospects from the Lone Star State were in action in the first weekend of the season.
These right side hitters were solid all day on Saturday:
Shelby’s offensive power helped her team Houston Skyline 16 Royal triumph in the 17s division. A right side hitter with incredible physical tools, she used her offensive range and firepower to play a major role in the team’s offense. Shelby was extremely productive for her team and has been, season after season, doing a great job in terms of adding new weapons to her arsenal while also limiting her errors. She also spent some time playing as an outside hitter and was solid with her passing.
Playing her first tournament with new team Houston Skyline 18 Royal, Maxwell added some firepower to their offense and was part of their victorious campaign in the 18s division. A heavy hitter with tremendous resources, she seems to have integrated well with her new teammates and also strengthened the team’s blocking. She also contributed with her versatility, playing as an outside hitter on certain moments, and indicated she’ll only get better as the team chemistry improves as the season progresses.
Another player who left Houston Juniors for Houston Skyline, Collins proved to be an interesting addition to 17 Royal. One of the top middles in the state, she started this season on the right after playing as an outside hitter during the last two high school season. The positional changes have been forcing Collins to develop different areas of her game as she continues to develop into a top player. She had a promising first experience on the right, benefiting from her incredible athleticism, her ability to hit quick sets and her excellent blocking, but will certainly look much better in the new position in a few months.
Adeline Hundl
Adeline Hundl
A new face to me, Hundl did a very good job playing on the right for Houston Skyline 17 Black. The team consistently made subs in their setter-right side combos, meaning she only got to play three rotations, but she got to display interesting tools to play the position. Her offensive game is very strong because she uses her length extremely well, has good variation with her shots and is very reliable. Hundl also moves well on the court and is productive with her blocking.
Haley Truett
Haley Truett
Truett had some good moments playing on the right for The Woodlands Skyline 18 Royal. She didn’t match the other right side hitters on this list when it comes to pure power, but was extremely effective with her shot selection and very precise with the location of her swings. Truett made contact with the ball at a very high point and always targeted the end line, making if very difficult for opponents to block her. She also displayed great composure to put the ball down in key moments.
