The event reunited eight teams from the region in each of the 17s and 18s divisions at the Open Court Sports Complex, in Katy, and some of the very top prospects from the Lone Star State were in action in the first weekend of the season.
Here are the setters who led their teams in a great way at the event:
Playing one age group up, Musgrove led her team Houston Skyline 18 Royal to victory in the 18s division. She displayed great connection with her hitters and formed a strong combo with fellow setter/right side Cayley Hanson Cayley Hanson 6’2″ | S Deer Park | 2024 State #43 Nation TX , giving the team excellent playmaking and a strong offensive option in every rotation. Musgrove is very strong technical and physically and does a very good job of quickly getting to the ball to set, which keeps every option open to her. Also very calm and precise, she still contributed to the team’s success at the net by scoring points with her skilled left hand and her big blocking.
Highlights
The best setter in Texas in her age group according to our Class of 2026 Prep Dig State Rankings, Thiebaud started the season with Houston Skyline 16 Royal with a victory in the 17s division at the Legends Classic #1. She was very effecient with her ball distribution, speeding things up whenever she had an opportunity. Thiebaud had a strong group of hitters to work with and made the most of it by sharing the ball around and running combinations. The technical setter also had some good serving runs during the day.
A skilled playmaker, Gasca stood out with her creative play even if her Katy United 17 Fathom team got just one win in three matches in the 17s division. She’ was crafty on the ball, but remained precise and did a good job in making good choices and creating possibilities for her hitters to score. I loved how she ran the team’s middles and created some combination plays in their only victory in the day, a three-setter against The Woodlands Skyline 17 Royal. Gasca also contributed on defense with her superior ball control.

Sydni Halfmann

Houston Skyline 17 Black used a setter duo on some occasions and the pairing of Halfmann and Alexys James Alexys James 5’10” | S Fulshear | 2025 State TX worked really well for them, helping the team get three wins in four 17s division matches. The two complemented each other well, as while James was more aggressive, Halfmann played a little bit more methodically, giving the team a different pace. She was always extremely precise with her locations and did a very good job of keeping all her hitters involved, not overloading any of them.
Cicherski and her The Woodlands Skyline 18 Royal team got two wins in four matches in the 18s divisions and I got to watch them in a tough moment against Houston Skyline 18 Black. I really liked how, despite not having good passes to work with, the setter continued to try and find solutions for their offense. Despite the difficult conditions, Cicherski remained calm and precise and played a solid match. She was also very active and productive on the backcourt, contributing with her serving and defense.
