Continue ReadingThe second round of the Puget Sound Region Power League is an excellent opportunity to see some of the best players from the state’s west side. Teams competed in a 3-match pool play before facing off in a single crossover match versus a corresponding finisher from a separate pool.
In this breakdown we dive into some of the setters keeping their teams moving- and feature some familiar players as well as prospects finding their way into Prep Dig Player Index for the first time.
Ensign is showing a big commitment on the defensive end, getting on the ground to dig out tough chances from her setter position. She is running the 5-1 up an age group with PSVBA 18 Legacy, and the lefty is staying dangerous with her attacks and her fearless backsets to her rights sides and middles running the slide. Ensign has excellent size, hands and volleyball IQ, and is one of the top setters in the Washington 2025 rankings.
Broeker was named Honorable -Mention 2A Evergreen Conference during the fall season for Tumwater, and the sophomore is part of a 6-2 rotation for Oly Reign 16 Gold. The team is 9-2 combined in Power League thus far, and the only blemish on this past weekend was a 2-set loss to Sudden Impact 17 Storm. Broeker stands 5’9″ and has good length at the setter spot. She showed a clean release and solid footwork pushing the ball to the pin and delivering accurate back sets to her right side. Broeker uses her long strides to cover ground defensively and working for the second ball, she worked hard to play passes out of the net and keep her team in rallies over the weekend.
Montesano junior Otterstetter is a first team all league player and 1A State Honorable Mention selection as well. The 2025 prospect has a strong frame and is setting a 5-1 for her Puyallup Juniors 17 National squad. Otterstetter has a high release point and gets her entire group of attackers involved. She plays defense first and gets a solid read on tips and off-speed shots, and has the quick reactions to punch a ball up with just one hand if needed. Otterstetter and PJVBC 17 rattled off three straight wins after a loss to start the day, finishing with a straight set win over NW Jrs. 18 UA Blue.
Leapai is playing as well as any 2026 setter in the Washington club scene this season. With two varsity seasons at Bellevue under her belt, she looks quicker, a bit taller and her confidence running the offense is through the roof. Leapai is identifying the best matchups pre-serve and during rallies to keep here team in the best possible position to terminate, and has no hesitation reversing the flow or pushing to the pin from a difficult spot on the court. SIVBC 16 is hanging tough in Flight 1, and Leapai’s ability to find their heavy handed attackers has been a big reason why.
Rice commands an offense, and is one of the most physical players in a match from the setter spot. Running a 5-1 she wins jousts, tallies blocks, finds crafty kills and plays gritty defense. She has a special connection with her Lynden teammate and fellow senior OH Ashley Shumate Ashley Shumate 6’3″ | OH Lynden | 2024 State WA . The two connected over and over again during the day of play, finishing with a 3-1 record on the day. Rice worked her athletic back row attackers into the offense, running them quick as a way to keep defenses off-balance.
