Athletes, parents, and coaches can click on the “How We Rank” story under the “Rankings” menu to learn more about the ranking process.
The key factor in this particular set of rankings is the athletes in this class are still quite young. Many will decide they would rather play basketball, softball, or a different competitive sport in college. Some of them will get burned out and not want to play at the college level. They are teenagers and could change their minds about their futures a dozen times or more in the next couple of years. There will be athletes who see their position in the rankings rise or fall until they make their graduation walks.
A second key factor is that a majority of these athletes were scouted during club team action. Moving forward the 14-16 divisions will be my focus for scouting during the next club season. Other athletes I saw play in a practice or scrimmage. There were no high school statistics for these 8th-grade athletes heading into their freshman seasons.
The main reason for the rankings now is to get athletes early exposure and to preview a group of freshmen who could be impact players for their respective high schools, however, not all will make their varsity teams as freshmen. The main importance is that each ranked player now has early exposure for the college, high school, and club coaches who subscribe to our website.
While I strive for perfection, I also understand that mistakes and typos happen. If you have questions about the rankings or see a mistake please feel free to DM me on social media @KSScoutDeck or email me at deckscoutks@gmail.com. I encourage all ranked athletes to claim their player profiles created on our website and unranked athletes to create new profiles to be considered for our watch list and future ranking updates.
Remember you attract more bees with honey than you do vinegar. If you send me a negative or rude email do not expect a reply. Also, keep in mind that, we do not update rankings on a week-to-week basis. Once an athlete is ranked in a spot, they stay there until the next round of rankings. We do attempt to update the rankings three to four times a year. This class might not be updated until next fall depending on the number of athletes I see in summer league or camp action.
Here is a look at the initial top 10-ranked athletes in the Kansas Class of 2028 rankings. Keep visiting Prep Dig this week to read more reports on this class. Each ranked player will get a brief report this week in intervals of 10 athletes per report.
Hailey Schmidtlein Hailey Schmidtlein 6'0" | MB Hayden | 2028 State KS , 6’0”, MB, Hayden
The No. 1 ranked athlete in the KS Class of 2028 is a future Hayden Wildcat. I saw her practice and play club ball this past season and she can jump out of a gym and has a physical frame for her age.
Mya Lee Mya Lee 6'1" | OH St. James Academy | 2028 State KS , 6’1”, OH, St. James Academy
Lee enters the rankings in the No. 2 slot. No one should sleep on a 6-foot-1 freshman. She is expected to attend St. James Academy and could compete for a varsity spot right away.
Blakely Walter Blakely Walter 5'5" | S Washburn Rural Middle School | 2028 KS , 5’6”, S/RS, Washburn Rural
Walter has a buzz about her game that you would find the most productive beehive in America. The future Washburn Rural prospect is ranked No. 3 overall.
Molly McGovern Molly McGovern 6'1" | RS Blue Valley | 2028 State KS , 6’1”, RS, Blue Valley
McGovern enters the rankings in the No. 4 position. She has a big reach and hit the ball hard. She is expected to attend Blue Valley High School.
Lilianah Jackson Lilianah Jackson 5'11" | MB Lansing | 2028 State KS , 6’0”, MB, Lansing
Jackson comes from an athletic family and debuts in the ranking at No. 5 overall. She will have plenty of opportunities to shine and grow as a player for a perennial state power in Lansing.
Vivian Goode Vivian Goode 6'0" | OH St. Thomas Aquinas | 2028 State KS , 6’0”, OH, St. Thomas Aquinas
Prep Dig has Goode, a future St. Thomas Aquinas Saint, ranked No. 6 in the initial 2028 rankings. She has a nice combination of size and quickness.
Kinley Belcher Kinley Belcher 6'0" | MB Maize | 2028 State KS , 6’0”, MB, Maize
Maize is a program that produces elite volleyball talent. Belcher is a six-foot prospect who could play early for the Eagles. She is ranked No. 7 overall.
Micah Ellegood Micah Ellegood 5'11" | MB Great Bend | 2028 State KS , 5’11”, MB, Great Bend
Ellegood caught my eye when I scouted the Central Kansas Rampage this past club season. The future Great Bend Panther debuts at No. 8. She has a bouncy game and can drop the hammer.
Landry Litton Landry Litton 5'10" | OH Beloit | 2028 State KS , 5’10”, OH, Beloit
Beloit is an elite program in the Class 3A ranks and will be adding a solid prospect next season in Litton. Like Jackson, Litton is a member of an athletic and competitive family. She enters the rankings in the No. 9 position.
Claire Ashley Claire Ashley 6'0" | OH Olathe West | 2028 State KS , 6’0”, OH, Olathe West
The Olathe West Owls always seem to have a loaded cabinet with talent. Ashley, a future Owl, rounds out Prep Digs’ initial top 10 ranked athletes. She has a compact swing and will be an asset to her high school team.
