The first day saw five games go the full three sets with the third one going to 25 points unlike other tournaments.

The tournament's four undefeated teams in Assumption, Magnificat, Mother McAuley and Ryle advanced to the gold brackets going 2-0 in pool play. DuPont Manual, Sacred Heart, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Ursula will join them. The gold bracket quarterfinals begin at 10 a.m.

DuPont Manual (13-1) and St. Ursula (8-1) had to survive two three-set battles to make it to the gold bracket. St. Ursula held off Clearwater Central Catholic (Florida), 2-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-22). That game saw St. Ursula junior [player_tooltip player_id='227797' first='Gabby' last='Semona'] and CCC sophomore Ella Van Zanten among others go back and forth before the Bulldogs pulled it off. Both senior setters in [player_tooltip player_id='152344' first='Emsley' last='Venard'] for St. Ursula and [player_tooltip player_id='455031' first='Josephine' last='Hensley'] for the Marauders put balls on target most of the time. St. Ursula lost for the first time in five sets to Girls Greater Catholic League rival Ursuline on Thursday and were not going to let another one slip away.

Manual pulled away from California opponent Buchanan to win 2-1 (25-23, 25-27, 25-17). The Crimsons are loaded and had a number of players step forward in the third set.

The Youngstown State commit is quick on her feet and gives great effort on every play going after balls. Dawson (pictured) is a vocal leader on the court, which is something she said she's been doing for a long time. She constantly encourages her teammates on the court. That enthusiasm clearly spreads to her teammates.

Jones does a great job as a senior leader both on the court and while standing by her teammates. She relays instructions from her coaches on the court and does her part to help the Bulldogs win games. Jones runs great fakes as a spiker and is a solid blocker. Jones said the Bulldogs needed to be more aggressive offensively swinging hard and it worked out to win both games.

Van Zanten has a bright future ahead for the Marauders. Van Zanten can put a lot of power into balls from the strong left side. The righty put balls past the tall, solid blocking Bulldogs team. She can hit off blocks and tip balls when necessary.

Hansel's improvement for the Raiders is evident each game. She comes in and makes the crisp passes necessary for the Raiders. Hansel said the team uses angles in practice to push balls to the target and that's helped her consistently produce two and three-ball passes.

The freshman is bringing some nice play to the libero spot for the Bruins. Reginelli hustles after balls and squares up her arms to them sending solid two and three-ball passes to the front row. She will only improve with more experience.

The Bulldogs did not get the results they wanted Friday, but it was not because of effort. Morley does what she can to give the Bulldogs chances in every game. She lays out for balls trying to keep plays alive. While taking steps toward the net, she tries to make the necessary adjustments to put balls down on tips and hard hits.
