How about an early pressure test for our newest upperclassmen?

The Bellevue West Invitational has been a staple on Nebraska's prep volleyball schedule for decades. This star-studded tournament draws elite competitors from the Omaha area and beyond, giving us an opening-week look at Nebraska's surefire title contenders. It's a way to identify some new leaders, too.

We ought to see plenty of that leadership from this year's junior class. The Class of 2027 ascends to upperclassman status this fall and will be eager to step up on big stages.

Let's pick out a few juniors who could seize that opportunity at the Bellevue West Invite.

We're starting with the defending Class A champs. Papillion-La Vista South has an encyclopedia full of impact players from the Class of 2027, and Moone has already started her junior campaign with a splash. She logged 12 kills on a 0.345 clip in Papio South's opening-night sweep over Millard North, setting the stage for more breakthroughs at this weekend's invite. We're well-acquainted with Moone's high-flying style on the left pin, so her emergence with the Titans is no surprise.

Expect Capece to add to her ever-diversifying scouting report. The Omaha Marian junior is building off an outstanding club campaign as Premier Nebraska 16 Gold's libero. She commanded the team's serve-receive pattern and helped lift the team to an Open bid through the Show Me Qualifier. However, we might see an entirely different side of Capece when she suits up for this weekend's invite. This all-around gem is also an effective outside hitter who was second on the Crusader roster in kills per set last year. We'll see a little of everything from Capece this season.

Don't forget about the stacked group of Class B contenders who will mix it up with the Class A powerhouses. Huff is built for any level of competition and is fresh off a podium climb with Premier Nebraska 16 Black at USAV Nationals. On the prep side, Elkhorn North opened its season with a rousing sweep over crosstown rival Elkhorn. Huff contributed on the right side with three kills and four blocks, and we expect her averages to rise after this tournament trip.

Omaha Westside exceeded expectations in its opening marquee matchup. The Warriors won a dramatic 17-15 fifth set over Millard West to start on the plus side, and we anticipate sustained success from frontcourt players like Deats. This versatile athlete has left a big impression in the Nebraska Elite gym and is poised for more gains with Omaha Westside. Deats can anchor the middle or the right side to give the Warriors plenty of lineup options for this weekend's gauntlet.

Gretna High School has drawn plenty of buzz in the Class of 2028, but we can't leave out the new wave of upperclassmen. Hilderbrand, like Deats, has become a major stock riser for Nebraska Elite and has accelerated her development with the club's top 16s squad. She embodies the qualities Gretna looks for in its outside hitters: poise, athleticism, and a willingness to lock things down in the middle-back area. The Class B scene is taking off.

One of Nebraska's most decorated club athletes is ready to soar on the prep side. Porter lifted last year's [program_tooltip program_id='428728' first='River' last='City Jrs'] 16 Navy squad to an AAU title and reached the title match again this summer. We're still taken aback by Porter's explosiveness off the floor and her growth as a backcourt player who can dime first contacts. She led the Mustang offense against Papio South on Thursday and should repeat that feat at Bellevue West.

We couldn't leave backcourt stars out of the discussion. Jacobson was part of that GJNC breakthrough for Premier Nebraska 16 Black, and she brings D1-caliber defense and passing to any backcourt she patrols. This has raised the expectations for Millard South this fall, and the Patriots have already logged an opening-night sweep over Omaha Burke. A colossal weekend test awaits.
