In Part 1, we discussed those standing out as highly coachable and some who demonstrate a strong game IQ. Another important intangible is a player's character and integrity. Coaches are striving to assemble the best team possible, and they aim to recruit players who will be positive representatives of their program. They look for qualities like trustworthiness, accountability, and respect for teammates, coaches, opponents, and officials. A recruit's behavior on and off the court, including on social media, is under scrutiny. But in this article, we are going to talk about those who show leadership, resilience, and a love for the game

Whether a player is a captain or new to a team, coaches look for athletes who can lead by example. This includes being vocal and supportive with teammates or other participants, having a positive attitude, and demonstrating the kind of effort and dedication that inspires others to do their best

Gehring first caught my attention with her hustle and ability to read the play of the ball. I'm fairly certain she knew where they were going to send the ball before they had even decided. Gehring was constantly talking through the play and encouraging those around her. Most impressive was her ability to rally those on her court to help shag balls before ever needing to be asked. She isn't afraid to get others involved, and they naturally tend to follow her.

Voights is a big presence at the net, and I would imagine that makes a lot of teams nervous when they look across the net and see her. I really had to write about her as a leader because she was our 1 and only middle for the showcase, and she rocked her role.

Mental Toughness/Resilience

Sports can be demanding, and coaches need to know that a player can handle pressure and overcome adversity. This includes bouncing back from mistakes, learning from a loss, recovering from an injury, and maintaining a positive attitude through challenges. These are important at any level and directly transfer to life skills.

Walker caught my attention with her setting. As a setter, you have to be prepared to adjust, and Walker did a great job of making those adjustments on the net. She had good location with her back sets and was locked in and focused on the task at hand.

This kid was one of the smallest players in stature, but definitely not in heart. One of my first notes on McDonough was 1 word. "Fearless". She came to compete, and she did just that. Whenever a backrow spot needed to be filled, she was there and never shied away from a big swing.

Passion & Love for the Game

Coaches want to recruit players who genuinely love their sport. This passion is evident in the player's energy, enthusiasm, and willingness to push themselves in and out of drills. It shows that the athlete is not just playing for a scholarship, a spot on the team, playing time, or recognition, but because they truly love the game.

Bryant was working hard in transition, whether she was setting or hitting on the right side. I loved how she was eager to step in and take swings because she has a great reach, and she's always ready to attack. Bryant was also communicating really well with others during the rally.
