Moving right along with our featured athletes coming to our Exposure Tour and Academy this Saturday, and we're combining two separate groups into one article. For me, the defender-setter combination is THE reason teams have success, and this group proves that. Here are three setters and three defenders we're watching that have “next level” written all over them.

With the fall in the rearview for the Fighting Irish, Alaina will use the entirety of this spring to train her way to lead Cathedral into championship-winning status next fall. Her length is her strength, as she uses the entirety of her 5'9” frame to go get tight passes, receive first contacts with high hands and locate the ball exceptionally well for her hitters.

The shortest of the three setters listed today, Landree's skill set is off the charts. Yorktown's setter in the 5-1 was a main reason for the Tigers' continued success despite graduation and size. It is this author's opinion that Landree should have received All-State honors from the IHSVCA for not only her skill set but the ability to keep the Tigers in the top five of 4A all season long. I know of no other setter, freshman or otherwise, that was more responsible for a teams' success in their first year on the job. I look forward to watching her work with Saturday's hitters, as she'll really be able to show out.

So, there's the long-and-lean setter, the shortest setter with the biggest skill set, so how about a nod towards the FASTEST setter? Kiersten's foot speed in getting to the second contact is second to none, and her quickness keeps her teams in-system more often than not. A setter must be able to take a bad pass and make it better—-and Miss Lutz makes it look easy because of her quickness. Add to it that her hands and set placement for her hitters are above average for this (or any) class, and you have a high-end next-level setter in the making.

I'll say it—-I LOVE watching this kid play. She's a 5' bulldog of a defender, with read-and-react skills that more than make up for bigger liberi in her class—-or any other, for that matter. She'll chase down an errant pass, receive serve in half the court if you let her, and is a second coach on the floor, directing teammates and seeing plays develop before they happen. I realize I can't be biased, and nothing I say represents the ACTUAL future for these kids, but allow me this—-Miss Beyer will make a college roster in 2029 because of her relentlessness and sheer willpower. I'd get back into coaching again if I had a team of kids like her.

Solid, smooth, and immovable. Whether wearing the libero jersey and playing left back or playing middle back and dealing with constant read-and-react situations, Jocelyn comes from a championship pedigree and a high school program that expects nothing less. At Carroll, she'll be needed for her entire career as THAT defender—-the one you plug in for three rotations to save the day and make plays that others just can't. In club, however, Miss Walborn will be able to showcase her skill set at the highest level of open ball you can find, and bring her cool and calm confidence with her.

Playing up a year for Circle's 16-1 this coming spring, Gabby is an elite-level libero that leads by example. Quiet and unassuming, she does her job well, without accolades, and is a much-needed part of a bronze-medal-winning roster at GJNC 15 Open from a year ago. If there ever was a kid you could plug and play from point one, no matter the roster or the situation, Miss Bassett is that kid, and is only getting better from here.
