What a division it was.

The 16 Open grind naturally draws attention at any USAV qualifier. Emerging sophomores compete for coveted bids in the sport's top division, giving us a wealth of athletes to discuss every weekend. I had the privilege of visiting the Show Me Qualifier with the expressed goal of learning more about stars from the Heart of America Region. Mission accomplished.

College recruiters will be very interested in the Kansas-Missouri corridor when contact with the 2028s begins this summer.

I've been fortunate enough to cross paths with [program_tooltip program_id='430200' first='KC' last='[program_tooltip program_id='428794' first='Power' last='']'] 16-1 multiple times throughout the 2026 campaign, including an early-season visit to Premier Nebraska. Duson has been an eye-catching athlete at every stop on the journey. This multi-talented athlete channels her explosiveness to become a game-changer on the right side. Her straight-down blocks have been awe-inspiring, but Duson has also upgraded her role in the [program_tooltip program_id='430200' first='KC' last='Power'] offense. The Show Me Qualifier brought the best out of this emerging 2028 from Blue Valley North.

Dynasty 16 Black has set the standard for the Heart of America Region, culminating in a runner-up finish at last weekend's qualifier. Lynnes was a major catalyst for the effort with her unwavering hustle in the back row. The Mill Valley sophomore brings everything you'd expect from a Dynasty libero: pinpoint passing, a steady platform, and plenty of vocal leadership. But Lynnes also doesn't mind making the routine, unheralded plays that don't always garner recognition. It's the life of a libero, but Lynnes has embraced it.

We're doubling up on the Mill Valley sophomores from [program_tooltip program_id='428889' first='Dynasty' last=''] 16 Black. While Lynnes brought defensive stability, Sturdy was the rock-solid setter running the show. She has carried an outside hitter role during her fall tenure with the Jaguars, but she dons the setter cap for her title-contending club squad. Sturdy is a quick, snappy setter who isn't afraid to dish against the flow. Her jump sets freeze opposing middle blockers, opening up one-on-one opportunities for her pins. Dynasty success usually operates through this position.

[program_tooltip program_id='428892' first='PVA' last=''] 16 Elite joined Dynasty in 16 Open's final Gold group, and Ashley had a lot to do with this ascent. The Olathe West star is an imposing right-side hitter who can terminate over the top with authority. Ashley is equally effective in the crosscourt or down the line, so there's no simple way to slow her down. [program_tooltip program_id='428892' first='PVA' last=''] was the second-highest finisher among non-qualified teams in 16 Open, capping a bid-worthy effort in home territory.

We're returning to the end line to highlight one of Apex 16 National Navy's anchor players. Smith displayed a fearless attitude in Kansas City while digging heavy heat for her Springfield, Missouri, club. Her influence wasn't limited to first touches, as Smith was also an eager secondary setter who could maintain order in out-of-system situations. Last weekend's challenging schedule has laid the foundation for Apex's further rise in the Heart of America hierarchy.

McDonald has made her mark as the go-to "big gun" in the Shockwave 16-Black operation. She has some experience at the middle blocker spot, but her prowess at the pins has taken precedence with 16-Black. We saw unmatched power and aggression from McDonald, whose length allows her to square up with 16 Open's juggernauts.

Bengfort's high-flying style is hard to replicate. She springs off the floor on the left pin and boasts one of the whippiest arms in the MAVS 16 Elite lineup. She thrives in the team's system, which is predicated on quickness and staying a step ahead along the net. Bengfort doesn't need a large window to score, either. Her tool shots and wrist-away swings were efficient weapons in Kansas City as 16 Elite battled through one of the event's most stacked divisions.
