Every summer, Nationals becomes part survival test and part opportunity. The teams playing their best volleyball in late June and early July are not always the teams that dominated headlines in December and January.

The Heart of America region once again enters Nationals with depth across every division, from Open contenders to dangerous Liberty and American teams capable of making noise. If the Nationals started tomorrow, here are a few predictions for how things could shake out. Let the debate begin.

Best Finish from the HOA Region: [program_tooltip program_id='430200' first='KC' last='[program_tooltip program_id='428794' first='Power' last='']'] 15-1

No pressure, Dave Johnson. There are several legitimate candidates here, especially in the 16 Open and 17 Open divisions, but [program_tooltip program_id='430200' first='KC' last='[program_tooltip program_id='428794' first='Power' last='']'] 15-1 feels like the safest bet to make a truly deep national run.

[program_tooltip program_id='428794' first='Power' last=''] has looked every bit like a team built for a long tournament. They defend well, play with discipline, and have consistently shown they can handle pressure moments against elite competition. More importantly, they do not look overly dependent on one player or one rotation to win matches. Briley Milo has emerged as a must-know player in this age group, and paired with players like [player_tooltip player_id='557372' first='Piper' last='Hudson'] and Elena McGuire, they are a dangerous team. And also fewer multi-sport conflicts later this summer that they successfully navigated this spring.

The biggest thing separating them right now is composure. At Nationals, especially in Open, matches swing quickly. Teams that stay steady emotionally tend to survive the grind, and [program_tooltip program_id='428794' first='Power' last=''] has shown that trait all season.

With fellow HOA Open qualifiers like adidas [program_tooltip program_id='428889' first='Dynasty' last=''] 15-1 and MAVS KC 15-1 also capable of strong finishes, the 15s age group could end up being one of the strongest national showings from the region overall.

Sleeper Team: KC [program_tooltip program_id='428823' first='Voltage' last=''] 17-1

Liberty division teams often get overlooked nationally, but KC [program_tooltip program_id='428823' first='Voltage' last=''] 17-1 feels like the type of team capable of becoming a problem very quickly.

They have enough athleticism and offensive fire[program_tooltip program_id='428794' first='Power' last=''] to pressure teams that may underestimate them early. What makes them intriguing is that they do not seem intimidated by bigger-name opponents. That matters at Nationals, where momentum and confidence can completely reshape a bracket.

The Liberty divisions are always unpredictable, and [program_tooltip program_id='428823' first='Voltage' last=''] feels like a team that could suddenly string together multiple wins once they settle into the tournament environment. [player_tooltip player_id='732904' first='Jordan' last='Redd'] is a must-see player, but she's not the only weapon with talented middles [player_tooltip player_id='485567' first='Tandee' last='Hiser'] and [player_tooltip player_id='524813' first='Paige' last='Outler'].

Do not be surprised if they become one of the quieter success stories from the HOA region.

Team Nobody Wants in Their Pool: MAVS KC 16-1

MAVS KC 16-1 may not always get discussed nationally with the same volume as some traditional [program_tooltip program_id='428794' first='Power' last='']house clubs, but they absolutely have the makeup of a dangerous Open team.

Why are they scary in pool play? Physicality and pressure.

They can speed matches up quickly with aggressive serving and transition offense, and they have the type of energy that can flip momentum fast. At Nationals, one bad pool-play loss can completely alter a contender's path. MAVS feels like the kind of team capable of handing a top seed an early loss.

That alone makes them one of the more uncomfortable draws in the tournament. Look for [player_tooltip player_id='543378' first='Olivia' last='Maciel'] to carry the weight offensively and for head coach Conner Gregston to push all of the right buttons.

Most Likely Breakout Team: [program_tooltip program_id='515466' first='Pohaku' last=''] 17-1

[program_tooltip program_id='515466' first='Pohaku' last=''] 17-1 already has talent. The question is whether they can put together the kind of complete tournament run that forces national attention.

If the Nationals started tomorrow, they would be one of the more intriguing breakout candidates from the region.

Their athleticism jumps out immediately, and when they are playing confidently, they can pressure opponents in ways many National Division teams are not prepared for. They also feel like a team with a higher ceiling than outsiders may realize. They are solid defensively with [player_tooltip player_id='800476' first='Lexi' last='Jett'] and [player_tooltip player_id='445924' first='Tatum' last='Massey'] anchoring the back row.

Nationals is often where confident, physical teams suddenly take off. [program_tooltip program_id='515466' first='Pohaku' last=''] has the tools to become that group this year.

Best Shot at a Major Upset: adidas [program_tooltip program_id='428889' first='Dynasty' last=''] 17-1

This is less about whether [program_tooltip program_id='428889' first='Dynasty' last=''] is capable of winning matches nationally, everyone already knows they are, and more about their ability to knock off one of the country's true elite Open contenders.

[program_tooltip program_id='428889' first='Dynasty' last=''] has the kind of balance that creates upset potential. They defend well enough to extend rallies with [player_tooltip player_id='830841' first='Camryn' last='Minatee'] in the libero jersey. They can terminate from multiple spots with [player_tooltip player_id='480396' first='Peyton' last='Kubik'], [player_tooltip player_id='436201' first='Riley' last='Riggs'], and [player_tooltip player_id='524854' first='Elizabeth' last='Weaver']. And they compete with confidence against physical teams.

Upsets at Nationals usually happen when teams stay aggressive instead of playing cautiously against nationally-ranked opponents. [program_tooltip program_id='428889' first='Dynasty' last=''] feels wired to attack rather than survive.

That makes them extremely dangerous in a one-match situation.

Every summer, Nationals becomes part survival test and part opportunity. The teams playing their best volleyball in late June and early July are not always the teams that dominated headlines in December and January.
