The McCracken County Mustangs may have a new head coach, but Izzy Myers is more than familiar with the Mustangs domination of the region.

Myers graduated from Ballard Memorial in 2022 before embarking on a four-year journey at Transylvania University in Lexington. The 22-year-old takes over a program that finished 31-8 last year and won its 13th region championship in as many tries. The Mustangs have never lost a region game since becoming a school in 2013. McCracken County ran into Bowling Green in the first round of state and did not make it to Winchester for the first time since 2021.

The Mustangs graduated five seniors off that team including defensive specialist Penny Kirkham, but do return five talented seniors in all-around [player_tooltip player_id='834881' first='Lilly' last='Hamilton'], libero [player_tooltip player_id='747076' first='Mollie' last='Canter'], defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='477251' first='Caroline' last='Presswood'] along with pin hitters [player_tooltip player_id='747618' first='Neely' last='Nyberg'] and [player_tooltip player_id='757579' first='Kambell' last='Dunning']. Senior Madeline Pierce has also shown great signs at defensive specialist.

Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1022305' first='McCoy' last='Gregory'] and sophomore Addy Parker have taken control of the offense as setters. Junior Lucy Jones and sophomore Shelby Hesley hope to help out on the outside. However, the 6-0 junior Jayci Sheppard and 5-11 [player_tooltip player_id='964629' first='Kyndal' last='Hite'] give the Mustangs much-needed height and balance in the middle, which they did not have last year. Myers said the size helps because the team still runs a fast-paced offense with Sheppard and Hite giving opponents different angles at which balls are coming at them. Myers added Sheppard and Hite give the Mustangs a bigger blocking presence.

McCracken County faces Bowling Green and last year's Tennessee Division I-AA state runner-up Dyer County in a tri-match on Saturday. The Mustangs opened the season Monday with a win at Community Christian.

1st District

Carlisle County Comets (17-14)

The Comets are still seeking that elusive region quarterfinal win in program history, but the return of all but one senior from last season has Whitney Puckett's crew optimistic it could happen this season.

They've made some changes in the 6-2 formation with junior [player_tooltip player_id='612113' first='Ella' last='Draper'] and junior Palin Bradley, a transfer from Graves County, setting up the hitters. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='535258' first='Brooklyn' last='Dunn'] has moved to libero. The outside hitters are sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='966210' first='Sophie' last='Grogan'] and senior [player_tooltip player_id='535256' first='Abree' last='Warren'] with senior [player_tooltip player_id='701272' first='Macee' last='Hogancamp'] and sophomore Edy Bruer playing the middle. Puckett said Bruer is currently injured so sophomore Olivia Webb is filling in there. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='816534' first='Madyson' last='Lynn'] is playing the right side. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='795458' first='Kaylee' last='McGee'] is also a key returning defensive specialist.

Puckett said her five seniors are determined to win. Puckett said she likes how the team hustles and is not happy when other don't do the same. Puckett noted she feels the team makes errors as the result of not staying focused and loses communication on hustle plays, but that is being addressed.

Carlisle County is 4-3 so far on the season. The Comets travel to Marshall County on Tuesday.

Hickman County Falcons (15-14)

The Falcons not only won the district crown, but became the first time in the current district to advance past the region quarterfinals with a 3-2 (9-25, 19-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-10) win over Community Christian before falling to Graves County in the region semifinals.

Junior outside [player_tooltip player_id='612112' first='Macy' last='Howell'] and junior middle/outside [player_tooltip player_id='905587' first='Kylie' last='Meshew'] after leading the team in kills last season. Junior outside Bailey Childress had 14 kills in the team's season-opening win over Livingston Central.

Hickman County is 2-3 on the season and travels to Ballard Memorial on Tuesday.

Fulton County Pilots (7-14)

The Pilots last made the region tournament in 2022.

Fulton County has a sound all-around sophomore in [player_tooltip player_id='930476' first='Brooklyn' last='Owens'] to build around. Junior Taylan Hendrix and sophomore Sydnee Whitten have also shown determination early in Fulton County's 1-3 start to the season.

Fulton County hosts South Fulton (Tennessee) on Tuesday.

Fulton City Bulldogs (0-19)

The Bulldogs once had a great run winning district championships in 2013 and 2012 then making it back to region as runner-up in 2014. Things may have been rough lately, but the Bulldogs did open the season ending a 22-game losing streak with a 3-1 (25-20, 13-25, 25-18, 25-22) victory over South Fulton (Tennessee). Senior 5-11 Piper Cavness led the Bulldogs with four aces in the win.

The next game on the schedule is Aug. 31 at home against Lake County (Tennessee).

2nd District

Community Christian Warriors (7-23)

The Warriors stumbled with inexperience one year after making it to the region championship. Community Christian only graduated two seniors, but is a young team that is starting three eighth graders.

Things start in the back row with junior libero [player_tooltip player_id='798025' first='Riley' last='Arnett']. Sophomore Addison Rudd also plays a big role as a hitter. Head coach Maggie Prewitt said she's seen the players grow a lot this season. The biggest thing she wants to see is the players not get down on themselves when teams build leads on them. She credited them for not doing that in the first and third sets in the loss to McCracken County on Monday.

Community Christian has dropped its first three games, but returns to action at Paducah Tilghman on Tuesday.

Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado (6-15)

Head coach Gwen Duncan said she has a balanced team this year with nine players returning and contributing. Duncan said she's been pleased with the combined effort to get the job done.

Things start with five seniors in all-around [player_tooltip player_id='835574' first='Ma'Kel' last='Ridgeway'], defensive specialists [player_tooltip player_id='791636' first='Aniyah' last='Newell'], Amelia Birdsong, outside hitter Jaden Faulkner and setter [player_tooltip player_id='881011' first='Emerson' last='Haus']. Junior Hailyn Hughes brings athleticism in the middle with sophomore libero Lily Coomer starting things off with nice first touches. The other two contributing sophomores are setter/right side Emma Martin and middle blocker Kendall Crass.

Tilghman starts the season Tuesday at home against Community Christian.

St. Mary Vikings (2-12)

The Vikings have won two games in each of the past two seasons. The top returning player is junior Kynlee Brummett.

St. Mary has dropped its first four games, but hosts Murray on Tuesday.

3rd District

Graves County Eagles (18-12)

The Eagles won a fourth straight district crown and drove to the region championship for the second time in three years. The Eagles graduated six seniors from that team but do return the likes of three seniors in outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='535247' first='MaryKate' last='Miller'], middle/outside [player_tooltip player_id='774411' first='Chloe' last='Wade'] and seasoned setter/defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='551813' first='Zoie' last='Joiner'].

The Eagles have a senior-laden team that also includes defensive specialist Landry Owen, middle blocker Emma Cosby, right side Maddy Woolf, Lauren Schipp, Emerson Elliott and Olivia Powers. Junior defensive specialist Jimma Wheeler and sophomore outside hitter Carli Goatley also hope to play big roles this season.

Head Coach Courtney Griffith admitted the Eagles struggle with McCracken County's speed, but they've scheduled tough opponents trying to get used to that speed this season. Griffith also said the expectation is to be one of the best in the region in the out of system game, noting teams can win a lot with strong play there.

Graves County is off to a 3-1 start including a huge district seed win over Ballard Memorial. The Eagles host Mayfield in a huge district seed game Tuesday.

Ballard Memorial Bombers (22-11)

The Bombers made it back to the region tournament for the first time since 2021 and only graduated one player from that team.

Senior libero [player_tooltip player_id='535251' first='Aubrey' last='Alexander'] is back to anchor the back row along with junior defensive specialist Raegan Cochran and sophomore defensive specialist Fallon Lucas. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='779144' first='Andee' last='Bodell'] and freshman [player_tooltip player_id='890926' first='Rilee' last='Bodell'] come back after splitting the sets last season. [player_tooltip player_id='779144' first='Andee' last='Bodell'] also played a good bit of defensive specialist. Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='989722' first='Grace' last='Flowers'] could also set or hit from the right side.

The Bombers have depth at the hitter spots. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='535253' first='Peyton' last='Phelps'] and sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='964630' first='Mallie' last='Owens'] will take swings on the outside with senior Liyah Holman along with sophomores [player_tooltip player_id='905594' first='Gracie' last='Glisson'] and Jada Roberts making things happen in the middle.

Ballard Memorial won the Comet Classic on Saturday before losing to Massac County (Illinois) on Monday to move to 5-2 on the season. The Bombers host Hickman County on Tuesday.

Mayfield Cardinals (19-7)

Kristen Wright takes over a program that missed out on the region tournament for the first time since 2021.

The Cardinals have a senior-laden team led by setter [player_tooltip player_id='484268' first='Neely' last='Flowers'] and outside/middle [player_tooltip player_id='829123' first='Alex' last='Berhow']. Six other key seniors are defensive specialists [player_tooltip player_id='817743' first='Piper' last='Hale'], Na Kya Gore, right side [player_tooltip player_id='841982' first='Bevan' last='Flowers'], outside hitter Kristian Jones along with middle blockers Dalia Mercado and Micayah Payton. Sophomore Ava Rozzell is the libero.

Wright said she has seen great growth of each team in a short time period. She credited the varsity for trying different plays that are a big more challenging to help them stretch their potential. Wright also said she's been working on the mindet with the players to help them not only on the court, but in life.

The Cardinals are 3-3 on the season so far. They travel to Graves County on Tuesday.

4th District

Marshall County Marshals (20-6)

The Marshals have won six straight district championships and have made it to the region semifinals the last two seasons.

They graduated five seniors from last year's team, but do return senior setter [player_tooltip player_id='484426' first='Emma-Leigh' last='Reynolds'] and two nice junior pin hitters in [player_tooltip player_id='755896' first='Laney' last='Yates'] and [player_tooltip player_id='905602' first='Bella' last='Redden']. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='850644' first='Brooke' last='Von Bokel'] gives the Marshals nice play in the middle and right side with junior [player_tooltip player_id='932258' first='Elin' last='Denflip'] returning at defensive specialist. Junior middle Makenna Forwood and freshman right side Rhenlee Park round out the starting rotation.

Head coach Paige Fletcher said she's liked the culture and sisterhood that's been build in her fourth season guiding the program. Fletcher said eveyone knows what is expected and they are held to a high standard, which in return has pushed the players more to get better.

The Marshals are 2-0 to start the season. They host Carlisle County on Tuesday.

Calloway County Lakers (17-16)

The Lakers have a new head coach in Gracie Adams. The next game is Sept. 1 at Graves County.

Murray Tigers (9-14)

Murray could not quite make it to double-digit wins two seasons in a row, but the Tigers hope to make it back there with a team of five seniors.

Seniors [player_tooltip player_id='504533' first='Reilly' last='Bassett'] at outside/defensive specialist and defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='504348' first='Addy' last='Robbins'] bring a lot of varsity experience.
