It's a shift in role. These players are no longer the ones learning the ropes from older teammates. They're about to become the most experienced players in their own gyms, the ones younger teammates watch to figure out how hard practice is supposed to be, how a rally is supposed to be talked through, how a mistake is supposed to be handled. That's a different kind of pressure than getting better at passing or attacking, and it's one this group is already stepping into.

UA Next is a useful place to watch that shift happen, because leadership in that gym can't lean on familiarity. Nobody in the room has history together. Whatever communication, composure, or ownership an athlete brings has to be built out loud, in real time, with teammates she met an hour earlier. For a group about to spend a full season being looked to by younger players on their actual rosters, that's about as close to a preview as it gets.

What stands out about these six athletes is that they're not waiting for high school to start acting like veterans. They're already doing it, refining details, taking on more responsibility, and are looking to use this last middle school season to build the foundation that makes next year's jump feel like a continuation instead of a shock.

Aurora Ridgeley-Mones has been playing volleyball for two years, and every part of her game reflects someone still discovering how much she's capable of. Her hitting has taken off this season, and she can point to the exact signal that tells her coaches trust it: when her setter starts feeding her one sets in big moments, she knows the growth everyone has been talking about is actually showing up on the court.

The proudest she felt at camp wasn't tied to a kill. It came from a hard dig she hustled to and turned into a point, the kind of play middles don't always get credit for chasing down. That willingness to go get a ball outside her usual role says as much about her as any hitting stat could. She left camp holding onto a distinction she's still working to live by: a good player believes she did everything right, while a great player keeps asking what else there is to improve. For an athlete only two years into the sport, that's exactly the mindset that turns raw growth into a real career, and she's carrying it into her final middle school season focused on sharpening her volleyball IQ and stepping into more of a leadership role.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Christiana Montoya plays outside hitter like someone who wants the ball in the biggest moments, but what she's built this season is less about the swing itself and more about what happens after one doesn't go her way. She used to fight frustration when a play broke down. Now, working off feedback to slow the game down mentally and trust the work she's already put in, she resets fast and moves straight to the next play, and that discipline shows up in her passing, her defense, and how she leads her side of the court.

The moment she's proudest of wasn't a single big attack. It was a long, grinding rally where she stayed composed, made a defensive save, and finished the exchange herself, the kind of point that asks an athlete to do everything right for longer than usual. She came away from camp with real clarity about what separates good competitors from great ones at a higher level: communicating under pressure, making fast decisions, and trusting her training instead of overthinking it. Heading into her final middle school season, she's aiming to round out her game further, sharpening her attacking, her serve receive, and her volleyball IQ, while continuing to train alongside older players who push her pace.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Stella Schneider runs an offense the way a good point guard runs a team, by learning what her hitters need before they have to ask for it. At camp, she made a point of talking with teammates she'd never played alongside to find out how they liked their sets, and that small habit of communication is what let a group of strangers start competing like a real team almost immediately.

Her are faster this season, and she's been putting in extra work outside of practice, including studying older athletes, to be able to push the ball to any part of the court. The moment she's proudest of happened during an icebreaker game called Vollis, when she passed a short ball over the net for the win. It wasn't a highlight play, but it was full effort applied to a rep most players would treat as a throwaway, and that's exactly the standard she took from camp: compete at a high level in everything, whether it's a drill, a scrimmage, or a game that technically doesn't count. She will be using her final year of middle school to add two new tools to her setting, diving and jump setting, the kind of additions that separate a setter who manages an offense from one who controls it.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Brooke Keefe's strongest tool at camp was her jump set, and she backs it up with a technical habit that's easy to say and hard to do consistently: staying behind the ball and putting real force into every set, in drills and in live play. That consistency, paired with vocal communication and leadership, is what let her direct a lineup of new teammates toward real success.

She found her proudest moment in an unlikely place, an icebreaker drill called Tennis, where she used her court awareness to place the ball where blockers wouldn't expect it and helped brand new teammates find their rhythm around her. That kind of quick-adapting IQ, reading a game inside a game, is a preview of the setter she's becoming. What she carried away from camp was simple and demanding at once: bring full effort and a confident mindset every time, no exceptions. As she heads into her last season before high school, she's focused on placement and timing as both a hitter and a setter, along with sharpening the mental and physical sides of her game together.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Sahej Ahluwalia played up this season, competing as a six rotation setter who added real hitting ability to her game for the first time, and that expanded role has made her more vocal as a leader on both sides of the ball. This was her second year at this UA Next camp, and the difference showed. She felt more comfortable with the pace and more confident in her own skills, which freed her up to notice exactly where she still needs to grow instead of just trying to survive the speed of play.

Her proudest moment had nothing to do with a kill or a set. It came when a coach recognized her for showing up to both middle school camp sessions in a single day, telling her that those who want more and do more will ultimately get more. That kind of acknowledgment matters to an athlete who already treats extra reps as the standard rather than the exception. Heading into her final middle school season, she's working to sharpen her speed, her accuracy, and the adjustments that come with hitting as a lefty, continuing to build a game with very few holes in it.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Cadence Hawk plays loud, in the best sense of the word. Cheering for teammates, communicating on every play, and hustling regardless of the score are the habits she leans on most, and this season she's paired that energy with real technical growth, setting the ball farther and higher and attacking with more power without being afraid to miss.

She actually had two moments at camp worth being proud of, and each one says something different about her game. One came on defense, taking a hard-driven ball off an opponent's swing and passing it perfectly to target. The other came on offense, scoring repeatedly by hitting to the back corner during scrimmages. Together they point to an athlete who's dangerous in more than one phase of the game. Her read on the camp competition was straightforward: there are a lot of great players out there, which means the standard for effort has to keep climbing. She's heading into her final year of middle school volleyball wanting to keep building her hitting while learning more about rotations, the kind of detail-level growth that turns an athlete who competes hard into one who plays smart.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

If You Enjoyed This Article, Help Us Keep the Momentum Going

🔥 Athletes Use this article to grow.
