Stella Schneider runs an offense the way a good point guard runs a team, by learning what her hitters need before they have to ask for it. At camp, she made a point of talking with teammates she’d never played alongside to find out how they liked their sets, and that small habit of communication is what let a group of strangers start competing like a real team almost immediately.
Her are faster this season, and she’s been putting in extra work outside of practice, including studying older athletes, to be able to push the ball to any part of the court. The moment she’s proudest of happened during an icebreaker game called Vollis, when she passed a short ball over the net for the win. It wasn’t a highlight play, but it was full effort applied to a rep most players would treat as a throwaway, and that’s exactly the standard she took from camp: compete at a high level in everything, whether it’s a drill, a scrimmage, or a game that technically doesn’t count. She will be using her final year of middle school to add two new tools to her setting, diving and jump setting, the kind of additions that separate a setter who manages an offense from one who controls it.
