Digging In: Back Row Players Making an Impact

Everybody loves the big kill. The hard swing that bounces into the stands or the block that brings the entire bench to its feet. But before most of those plays can happen, somebody has to make the first contact. That's where the back row comes in.   I've watched a lot of volleyball this season, and there are some really talented defenders across Arkansas. Most are liberos who control the back row all night. Others are defensive specialists who come in, do their job and completely change a rotation. Playing great defense is more than piling up digs. It's reading hitters, controlling serve receive, getting your platform behind the ball and turning a hard-driven attack into a ball your setter can actually do something with.   These are some of the back-row defenders who have caught my attention this season.    Eden | L | Northside   Eden is one of the best in the business. She's quick, intuitive and, as a former hitter, understands positioning and how to read an attack. She recently reached 1,000 career digs and has been a steadying force on the back row for Coach Matthew Waack and the Lady Bears.   Her first contact is solid, and she can run down just about anything. What really stands out to me is her positioning. Eden reads the play early and gets herself behind the ball, allowing her to stay on her feet and make controlled digs on balls that force a lot of defenders to the floor.   And the numbers back up what you see. She currently leads the state in both digs and digs per set.   When the new 2027 rankings drop, Eden will be my No. 1 defender in the state for 2027. She has the numbers, the skill and the volleyball IQ. For college coaches looking for a back-row defender, somebody needs to snatch her up.   Season Stats 70 sets | 19 aces | 94.7% serve % | 488 | 7 dps | 279 receptions     I have been wanting to write more about [player_tooltip player_id='994942' first='Addison' last='Hadaway'] since seeing her at a camp back in July. What a season this sophomore is putting together.   Addison is a hard-working, high-IQ player who has quickly established herself on the back row. She isn't far behind Fields in terms of production, ranking second in the state in digs and among the top five in digs per set. Hadaway brings more than defense to the Bulldogs. She has been a consistent server and gives her team another reliable setter when needed. She understands the game, plays under control and continues to find ways to contribute.   And she's only a sophomore. As Hadaway continues to grow and develop, watch for those numbers to keep climbing.   Season Stats 61 sets | 10 aces | 97% serve % | 325 | 5.3 dps | 375 receptions | 23 assists     [player_tooltip player_id='1008000' first='Braylin' last='Merritt'] | L | Conway   Conway has relied on [player_tooltip player_id='1008000' first='Braylin' last='Merritt'] for a lot more than just her play on the back row. She is the most experienced player returning from the Lady Cats' state championship teams, and that experience shows every time she steps on the court.   Braylin is as good as they come on the back row. She commands the defense and makes sure everyone is where they need to be. In many ways, Merritt is a coach on the floor for Coach Laura Crow. She is a go-getter who simply refuses to let the ball hit the floor. Merritt is already just 11 digs away from last season's total of 308, and she has done it in 31 fewer sets.   But her value to this Conway team goes beyond the numbers. Braylin is solid in every aspect of the game, and her leadership has been a major factor in keeping a young Lady Cats squad focused and sitting atop the 6A-Central at the midway point of conference play.   Season Stats 57 sets | 17 aces | 91.5% serve % | 297 digs | 5.2 dps | 310 receptions | 48 assists     Just a sophomore, it seems like [player_tooltip player_id='763687' first='Bristol' last='Bonanno'] has been around for years. She burst onto the scene last season with 267 digs and 5.3 digs per set as a freshman for Shiloh Christian.   She is running at about the same pace this season, despite Shiloh making the move up to 6A and facing some of the top power hitters in Arkansas. Nothing seems to intimidate Bonanno. She can go get any ball the court, or the stands, will hold.   Bonanno comes from a volleyball family, but she is cutting her own path with her dogged play on the back row. She reads the game well, competes for everything and has already established herself as an important part of the Shiloh defense.   And the fun part? She's only a sophomore. We get two more years after this one to see just how high those numbers can go.   Season Stats 53 sets | 13 aces | 93.5% serve % | 267 | 5 dps | 349 receptions | 25 assists     I really have to brag on [player_tooltip player_id='538288' first='Abby' last='Robinson']. I watched her play at Pulaski Academy a few weeks ago, and it was a master class on libero play. She was EVERYWHERE.   She made multiple one-handed digs on balls heading off the court, got to attacks that most liberos wouldn't even reach and made over-the-back saves to keep rallies alive. She did it all. It turned into a battle of the liberos that night, with PA's Emma Grace Kimball making incredible plays on the other side. Those two put on a show.   I've watched Abby for the last two years in club, and she is a bulldog on the court. Fiery, commanding and never afraid to take charge of the back row. She doesn't get as many headlines as some other players, but her play speaks for itself. Henderson State is getting a good one. Robinson is going to make the Reddies very happy next year.   Season Stats 58 sets | 14 aces | 90.9% serve % | 257 | 4.4 dps | 245 receptions | 21 assists     This one is for the DSs out there.   [player_tooltip player_id='762776' first='Whitney' last='Yarbrough'] plays alongside superstar libero Bryalin Merritt at Conway, but the sophomore has carved out an important role of her own for the Lady Cats. At 4'11", she stands out like a giant with the way she plays. She is an absolute dynamo and one of the more enjoyable players to watch.   There are players with bigger stat lines, but I dare say you won't find many who play with more heart. Yarbrough has a great platform, a high volleyball IQ and a strong will. She always seems to be in the middle of the action and understands exactly what Conway needs from her.   What really stands out to me are the numbers that matter for a DS. Yarbrough is serving at 97.5% and has handled 139 serve receptions with only four errors. When you're a complementary player, limiting mistakes is huge.   Solid serve. Solid first contact. Be in the right spot. Know your role and deliver when you're called on. That's winning volleyball.
