Connections are strong.

That thought was the impetus behind developing these scouting-report/photo pieces a few seasons ago to act as yearbook pages. I've written as many of them as I could based on watching teams play in person. Hopefully, they capture that squad in words and pictures, and can be accessed years down the road.

Today, we look at Lewis Central, who I watched play at the Iowa City High tournament in early September. The Titans were working their way through rebuilding after the loss of production to graduation after last season. They competed well with a strong field.

Lewis Central has been one of the more consistently competitive teams in the western part of the state for some time. Its student-athletes become more connected and compete at a higher level as the season advances.

Here's a closer look at student-athletes standing out followed by photos of the Titans:

When I showed up at the Iowa City High tournament early in the 2026 season, it felt right that Young was there lining up for Lewis Central. She impressed me as a freshman at the event in 2024 and then again there last season. Those performances were a snapshot of what's been an outstanding for the Lewis Central libero. She's commanded the back row since stepping on the court as a ninth-grader and has steadily become more steady with the years. Young moves well laterally and in a straight line. She flows well with the action, reading the opposition and settling into proper positions against the attack. In serve-receive, Young reads the ball well, delivers crisp passes and starts the Titan transition. She's a vocal leader and communicates well with teammates.

Cooper impressed me with her play at the Iowa City High tournament during the last two seasons. She did the same at this year's event, providing Lewis Central with a terminator on the outside. During her first two prep campaigns, she was hammering away at the opposite pin. The ability end points at either spin gives Cooper the desired versatility that colleges seek. She's grown physically, bringing height, long arms and growing power in her swing. It's heavy now with a chance to add velocity in the future. Cooper is a good defender at the net. There's a lot of athleticism here, which helps in moving fluidly around the court and rising up with an impressive vertical leap.

Arkfeld was operating as a six-rotation outside hitter when I saw her during the Iowa City tournament early in the 2026 season. She's a well-rounded volleyball player with a broad base of skills. Her ability to terminate points from the pin results from explosiveness off of the court and a good feel for hitting the defense where it's most vulnerable. Athleticism helps her defend at the net and in the back row. For the latter, Arkfeld moves well with match flow and into positions to take on the opposing attack. She also holds up well in serve-receive. There's plenty of room for more growth of her game, too, which should be attractive to prospective colleges.

When I watched McSorley compete in person at last year's Iowa City High tournament, she stood out with her consistency while working in a 6-2 system. The senior did the same back at this year's event, this time operating as the lone setter. McSorley flashes a keen feel for playing the position. She makes good decisions on where to go with the set and puts the ball in spots where hitters can tee off. McSorley is a smart volleyball player that learns from opponent tendencies, using that information to her advantage and improve as the match advances. She's also well-rounded, defending well in the back row and at the net with the skills to end points putting the ball down or dumping it in the donut. The Titans are in good hands with McSorley at the controls in 2026.

Lewis Central's Braylyn Coats.
