It's hard to believe we're three weeks into the ride, but here were are.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>While teams will decide it on the court, predicting who they will be is a fun exercise, for me, and, hopefully, you. We love rankings!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I'll be lining teams in the state's largest class, 5A, each Monday (or Tuesday) throughout the season. Here's how I see it three week into the campaign:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>1.</strong>&nbsp;<strong>Waukee Northwest</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Wolves maintain a strong grip on the No. 1 ranking despite losing to fellow large-school state champion Overland Park (KS) Blue Valley West High in Gretna, Neb. during the weekend. They also defeated a couple of strong programs from the Omaha area at the event. With a lot of 5A teams in Iowa knocking each other off in a wild early-season, Northwest has been the most consistently solid. Ankeny</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Hawks remain at No. 2 despite dropping a 2-1 decision to Liberty at the Iowa City West tournament on Saturday. The Hawks also swept matches against Bettendorf, North Scott, Ballard and Regina in the event, and own victories against Liberty, Pleasant Valley, Dowling, Assumption, Center Point-Urbana, Mount Vernon and other top teams. Dowling Catholic</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Dowling Catholic has a less firm grip on No. 3 after losing 2-1 at the Iowa City West quad last week. The Maroons' only other setback this season was a 2-1 decision against Ankeny. Katie Muller has piled up 43.0 blocks to go with 57 kills (.347), and freshman [player_tooltip player_id='790687' first='Hailey' last='Reinders'] has 39.0 blocks and 27 kills.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>4. Dallas Center-Grimes</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Dallas Center-Grimes (18-0) checks in fourth again this week. The Mustangs swept Newton in a Little Hawkeye Conference match and then won the championship at the Southeast Polk tournament, knocking off both Centennial and Waukee, 2-1, in the Gold Bracket. Iowa City West</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The fifth spot in the rankings remains the most difficult one to pin down. A case can be made for several teams in this tier. Iowa City West moves up one spot to take it this week. It's partially on the strength of sweeping Liberty and Assumption at the Trojans' tournament this weekend. The team's potential after reaching state last year also factors in. It's going to play a role in this area of the rankings because several programs are close. [player_tooltip player_id='360642' first='Sophia' last='Austen'] owns the team lead in kills with 124 (.297) with [player_tooltip player_id='754657' first='Cyan' last='Blommer'] at 122 (.218) in 37 sets. That duo has combined for 182 digs as well. [player_tooltip player_id='610472' first='Josie' last='Austen'] and [player_tooltip player_id='533845' first='Taylor' last='Otte'] have teamed up for 158 kills.
