Connections are strong.

That thought was the impetus behind developing these scouting-report/photo pieces a few seasons ago to act as yearbook pages. I've written as many of them as I could based on watching teams play in person. Hopefully, they capture that squad in words and pictures, and can be accessed years down the road.

Today, we look at Waterloo United, who I watched play at Iowa City High tournament in the middle of September. The Titans competed hard throughout the match despite being short-handed by injury.

Here's a closer look at student-athletes standing out followed by photos of Waterloo United:

Prior to a mid-September matchup at Iowa City High playing for newly formed Waterloo United, the last time I scouted Jones was at the M1 Elite Scrimmages in early January at Rochester, Minn. She enjoyed a strong club campaign in leading her team to the USAV Nationals this summer and carried that momentum into her final prep season, when she's atop every opponent's scouting reports. Despite that, she cranked out 14 kills in three sets against the Little Hawks on Tuesday. Jones was attacking from both pins and the back. Her ability to adjust to set location and get off a heavy swing impresses. Jones' five digs were the second most on her team and showed off her all-around game. She remains available to college programs, which is puzzling based on the talent level. Some smart program will end up with a steal in the end.

I hadn't scouted Lingua in person before seeing her compete for a first-year program in Waterloo United during mid-September at Iowa City High. The sophomore was breaking in as a three-rotation outside hitter. She ended up finishing the match with the third most kills on her team boosted by the third best hitting percentage. Lingua also came up with two digs, proving able to hold up when challenged in serve-receive. She's tall with long arms and athleticism. There's potential here through more reps, making Lingua's development worth tracking. She was one of the top players for Waterloo West softball this summer as a sophomore.

First-year program, Waterloo United, was running a 6-2 when I saw it competing at Iowa City High during mid-September. Moore was part of the 1-2 punch at setter. The freshman looked calm, cool and collected facing a ranked opponent on the road so early in her prep career. She tied for the team lead in assists, displaying a strong feel for playing the position. Moore flows well with match action, moves quickly to meet passes and sets the ball where attackers can tee off. She makes sound decisions on where to go with the set. A good athlete, Moore competed as an eighth-grader for the Waterloo West softball team this summer. She is a volleyball prospect with plenty of potential as well.

Young produced the second most kills for first-year Waterloo United when I watched the Titans compete at Iowa City High during a mid-September MVC match. The senior also paced the squad in blocks. Not the tallest player at the net, she succeeds with quick bounce off the court, a solid vertical leap and keen timing. Young is ready when her number is called and could see her production rise with more opportunity. She has upside to get the ball down through and around the block, and in throwing up a block to stifle the opposing attack.

Waterloo United's [player_tooltip player_id='495803' first='Ava' last='Jones'].
