The 37th District has maintained a wall in the 10th Region that has only been smashed through by Montgomery County in 2021.

While the Scott Eagles may be the two-time defending region champions with a state semifinal appearance in 2024, the leaders on top of the region wall appears to have unsurprisingly changed hands across district's other side of the Licking River to the Bishop Brossart 'Stangs. Bishop Brossart had lost all six games against Scott since Danielle French took over the program in 2023. Entering Wednesday, only senior setter [player_tooltip player_id='484451' first='Aubrey' last='Rebholz'] had tasted a varsity victory over the Eagles after stepping in for the injured setter in Bishop Brossart's 37th District championship win at Scott in 2022. One week later, Rebholz helped Brossart to the last win over Scott in the 10th Region championship game in Alexandria.

That 'Stangs broke through that barrier with a convincing 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-10) victory over the inexperienced Eagles on Wednesday to stay undefeated at 7-0 on the season. Things started in the back row with libero [player_tooltip player_id='587827' first='Grace' last='Frommeyer'], [player_tooltip player_id='569742' first='Josie' last='Reckner'] and [player_tooltip player_id='891600' first='Audrey' last='Arnold']. Outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='885299' first='Evelyn' last='Laker'] also made a number of plays all over the court. That let Rebholz set a number of hitters led by 6-2 middle [player_tooltip player_id='515259' first='Callie' last='Ritter'] along with [player_tooltip player_id='832519' first='Hailey' last='Heitker'], Laker, [player_tooltip player_id='832519' first='Hailey' last='Heitker'], [player_tooltip player_id='885509' first='Emma' last='Sheanshang'], [player_tooltip player_id='988769' first='Claire' last='Decker'] and [player_tooltip player_id='732580' first='Leah' last='Robinson'].

"We've talked about this game all season and we met in our locker room before we came out and played. I just said, 'You know how to play. You know what to do. You've clearly shown how capable you are of playing tough teams," French said. "You beat Conner and (Covington) Holy Cross. Those are very good teams. So we know we have the strength and the ability to beat good teams. This is an exciting win. It shows the girls I think what exactly they can do and they're just good teammates. They play for each other. They don't play for themselves. They know that if I need someone to go in and get a job done, they're okay with it. They don't care if they get subbed out, if they don't start, or if they don't go in for a rotation because they want what's best for this team. It's so nice and refreshing to have that as a coach."

Scott (2-5) may be struggling now, but could be a threat in the postseason if some things get worked out. Libero [player_tooltip player_id='877753' first='Emory' last='Sullivan'] and outside/defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='734852' first='Jacinda' last='Campbell'] are working with the inexperienced teammates trying to help them get into the offensive flows the Eagles are used to. Junior 6-0 middle [player_tooltip player_id='1012637' first='Makenna' last='Conley'] did take some nice swings when balls came her way, but developing that flow may take time.

These 'Stangs did their part to break down that wall against Scott. On the other side, certain Scott players have been doing what they can to rebuild the Scott foundation for success.

Ritter gave the Eagles problems on the ones all evening. Unlike previous seasons, Scott struggled to hit balls away from her and keep Brossart out of system. She improved her arm swing during club season and it showed. Ritter got on top of balls and pounded the ones to the side lines. Ritter also placed a number of roll shots. Ritter added in her usual, aggressive play at the net forming solid double blocks with teammates. She extends her arms and goes after balls. Ritter also puts down overpassed balls with authority.

Rebholz (pictured) displayed her five years of experience as a varsity setter using quick hands and sound decision-making to involve a number of hitters. Rebholz executed a variety of short and long sets. Rebholz mixes in setter dumps and is not afraid to shove second balls to corners to catch opponents off-guard. Described by teammates as energetic, positive and a great leader, Rebholz mixed in floats and nice topspin on her hard serves. Rebholz said they were so excited to get the monkey off their backs as the result of coming in ready to play and wanting to win badly.

Arnold has been a consistent passer for the 'Stangs, but she took major steps forward as an outside in this game. Arnold saw an opening down the left line and smacked the ball to the floor there on the go route. A quick celebration with teammates followed. Arnold tools blocks and sends free balls over with a purpose. Arnold said she'd been working on the line shot in practice and that when Rebholz sent the ball to her, it was her opportunity to execute and she put it down.

Laker has a nice arm swing and puts down hard line swings. Laker tools blocks and tips balls to shallow parts of the court when defenders are playing back for her harder swings. Laker makes nice in-air adjustments to make plays. Laker made a number of sound first touches in the back row and kept Scott out of system with her serving. Her serving accuracy needs work, but it will get there because she is coachable. Laker said it's typical to get a number of players involved because they're all competitive and want to win. Laker added the 'Stangs stick to fundamentals and it's become their identity.

Frommeyer set a huge tone in the first set diving for a ball that veered over the net and into an open spot on the other side for a huge kill, landing a huge cheer from her teammates, coaches and the home fans. She continuously hustled after balls under control and made a number of quality out of system sets. Frommeyer has picked up her leadership as a third-year starting libero and sets up well behind the blockers.

In her second year starting at libero, Sullivan could easily try to do too much on the court with the inexperience surrounding her, but the opposite is happening. She is trusting her teammates and helping them grow. Sullivan is sound on serve reception and closes creases quickly. Sullivan squares her body to balls to make nice passes. Sullivan also makes quality out of system passes and sends balls back toward the net.

Note from Writer

Mike Graham has been writing for Prep Dig for two years and has enjoyed getting to know the volleyball scenes in Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
