Although Ohio girls volleyball was reshaped from four to seven divisions a couple of seasons ago, the Division 2 level has seen a a variety of teams traverse the bracket with a viable shot to stand atop the podium. As Avon claimed the D2 title in 2025, St. Ursula (Cincinnati) was the first D2 champion immediately following the divisional expansion. Avon, currently 13-8 overall and ranked #8, is a long shot this year to repeat following the graduation of some key pieces last season, while SUA has moved divisions upward and now competes among the D1 teams. Here are some teams and key prospects that could produce the effort and momentum to be able to lift the trophy in November.

ANTHONY WAYNE Generals

The #3 ranked Generals were oh so close the past couple of season on the backs of some recent top prospects leading the way offensively through a powerful and efficient effort. Gone are those superstars, but left behind was a standard of competition and success that has transcended to some of those supporting members and newcomers who are guiding their 2026 success. Senior attacker [player_tooltip player_id='839903' first='Charley' last='Gardner'], a two-time all-NLL selection, is one of the top arms in the 2027 class. The Bowling Green State commit is having her best offensive season at a career high of 4.2 k/s to match her career best action defensively at 11.0 d/m. Fellow senior [player_tooltip player_id='776967' first='Addy' last='O'Shea'] is second on the team at 2.5 k/s while adding 10.1 d/m of her own in a breakout season. This 1-2 punch is a handful with Gardner providing the all important veteran experience as a viable contributor over the past two seasons as part of their previous deep postseason runs and ended with consecutive seasons as the D2 state runner-up. The setting role is shared between sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='779129' first='Hailey' last='Hutcheison'] and junior [player_tooltip player_id='911502' first='Alayna' last='Rieger'], who have dished 349 and 326 assists respectively. Junior Maizy Donley leads the Generals' defense at 13.0 d/m in her first varsity action. Finishing 11-0 in Northern Lakes play, Anthony Wayne is the #1 seed in the Northwest sectional and will face the winner of the opening match between Southview and St. Ursula Academy (Toledo).

MAGNIFICAT Blue Streaks

Magnificat is a traditional power in their ability to reach the depths of the postseason and knocking on the door of the crown. Their lone state title was achieved in 2021 as they have since arrived at the later rounds of regionals or the final weekend consistently since then. Currently ranked #1 in D2, the Blue Streaks could break through in 2026 as they feature one of their best core groups of athletes. They are experienced through high level club action and their recent fall schedule that featured competition against some of Ohio's top teams across different divisions. Their core action features primarily non-seniors that have an opportunity to develop their own mini-dynasty given their success this season and the potential to do it all again next Fall. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='582210' first='Grace' last='Regula'] is a dynamic and efficient attacker leading their offense while fellow juniors [player_tooltip player_id='559630' first='Kaelin' last='White'] and [player_tooltip player_id='568163' first='Lizzie' last='Godlewski'] are also featured as part of their pin trio of arms. Their net defense has depth with the likes of Godlewski on the right pin, along with juniors [player_tooltip player_id='749983' first='Lauren' last='Locker'] and [player_tooltip player_id='582208' first='Eliana' last='Ashley'] as well as sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='774775' first='Mary' last='Clayton'], who is leading Magificat at 3.2 b/m. What might be most impressive is that a sophomore and freshman lead the key skills areas as 2029 setter [player_tooltip player_id='776083' first='Scarlett' last='McDavid'] guides the offense at 9.3 a/s as first-year DS/L prospect [player_tooltip player_id='936918' first='Julianne' last='Bocci'] provides a team high 13.1 d/m. This is a team that has all the tools to win. Their playoff journey begins as the #1 seed in the Northeast 5 sectional versus Valley Forge.

BIG WALNUT Golden Eagles

The #2 ranked team in D2, Big Walnut is unbeaten at 22-0, which is a testament to the veteran depth they feature in just about every role in their rotation. The senior-laden Golden Eagles have lost just eight total sets all season through a balanced offense. Outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='847604' first='Shelby' last='Damron'] leads their offense at 3.0 k/s as she is closely followed by the 2.9 k/s from fellow senior [player_tooltip player_id='838629' first='Sophie' last='Hamilton']. Middle [player_tooltip player_id='810065' first='Abi' last='Swisher'] provides offense between the pins while maintaining her large impact on the defensive side. She boasts a career average of 3.3 b/m over four seasons. Senior setter Audrey Colson is likely the most key veteran as she has been their primary distributor the past three seasons, recently surpassing 2,000 career assists while averaging her best numbers at 8.9 a/s over the course of this season. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='808538' first='Claire' last='Dixon'] has filled in well in her first significant varsity action. She leads the Golden Eagles at 11.3 d/m. Experience. Chemistry. Hunger. These are attributes that often define teams that feature a core group that has been grinding together for multiple seasons and find themselves on the cusp of wrapping up a terrific collective effort, which Big Walnut has created over recent seasons. As the #1 seed in the Central 1 sectional, the Golden Eagles will take on Franklin Heights in their first match of the playoffs.

They have since sustained good success, arriving back atop the ECC standings as the only champion in 2026, a position they last held alone back in 2023. Their offense is led by one of the top freshman in all of Ohio. [player_tooltip player_id='936956' first='Sammi' last='Wehrman'] is a 6'0 pin that has put down 288 kills for a 4.7 k/s average and impressive efficiency of .396. She's a fearless attacker, with potential to offer a big arm each time she swings through the varied attack points they provide her.
