Connections are strong.

That thought was the impetus behind developing these scouting-report/photo pieces a few seasons ago to act as yearbook pages. I've written as many of them as I could based on watching teams play in person. Hopefully, they capture that squad in words and pictures, and can be accessed years down the road.

Today, we look at Iowa City West, who I watched defeat rival Iowa City High twice this season, the most recent being in Tuesday's championship bracket of the MVC Tournament. The Trojans won the conference crown and are tracking for a return to the state tournament.

Here's a closer look at student-athletes standing out followed by photos of Iowa City West:

Austen has established herself as one of the state's top all-around volleyball players. The Iowa State commitment has been a problem at the pin for many years running and has worked hard at improving her efficiency. She explodes off the court into a big vertical leap and has a plan when preparing to contact the ball, reading the defense and making smart decisions on the swing. A good athlete with quickness and sharp reflexes, Austen has enjoyed her greatest improvements in the back back and in defending at the net. She's one of those players that influences matches in multiple ways. Austen is at the top of opponents' scouting reports for good reason.

Eastvold earned all-state honors last season in helping guide Iowa City West back to the state tournament for the first time since 2016. The setter took a step forward on the club circuit earlier this year and has returned for her senior prep season with a game even more advanced. Eastvold looked locked in with her attackers when watching her compete on a couple of occasions. The senior moves well around the court, getting into position to deliver the ball precisely to the spots most beneficial to the attackers' success. Her efficiency and consistency in doing so are the best in her career. Eastvold is strong defensively and can end points, too.

McDonald is an entertaining volleyball prospect to scout. I was reminded of that when watching her in person multiple times during the last few weeks. The University of Iowa commitment brings excellent energy, focus and skills to the court. The junior covers a lot of area in the back row. She stands up strong against the attack with quickness, sharp reflexes and technical soundness to kick start transition off of serve-receive or in digging up the opposing attack. McDonald adjusts to tendencies during matches and becomes better positioned as they go along. She consistently is up to the task when challenged, often leading to her being avoided by teams.

Otte has developed into one of the state's most impactful middle hitters. It's happened through hard work along the club circuit and during productive prep campaigns. She competes for teams packed with talent, leading to her being overshadowed at times. Otte has proven time and time again that she can get the job done when presented with opportunities. She's a power player on the attack, crashing through blocks with a heavy swing. Becoming better at reading the opposition through more reps has led her to succeeding working off of what the defense gives her. The block has always been a strength of her game. Otte continues working on the finer points of that skill and is becoming more efficient there as well.

Often times a sign that you're seeing a special player in any sport is them leading you to say "wow" when watching execution of their craft. That happens when seeing Blommer compete in volleyball. I've witnessed it a lot during the last few years and am noticing an uptick in the amount of times I've been amazed in 2026. She was lights out during her team's run to the USAV National Tournament in the Open Division this past summer in Indianapolis. Blommer has had me shaking my head some more during a few in-person scouts this prep campaign. Her vertical leap is prodigious, allowing her to sky up and get on top of the ball. Blommer seems to add power each time I see her. She's one of those players consistently defeating defenses that are well-positioned, a sign of a special player.

I wrote last month after seeing Austen for the first time since early June during club season that she really looked to have taken her game up a notch. Those advancements were confirmed when viewing her compete again in the MVC Championship bracket on Tuesday. The sophomore is doing everything in the game better and lifting her stock as a volleyball prospect. An excellent athlete that also excels on the basketball court, Austen keeps adding power to her performance. There's also additional versatility having seen her attack the opposition from the middle of the net in club and as part of the West High strategy this year. She's in line for activity on the recruiting trail come June 15.

Iowa City West 2026. The high school volleyball years create wonderful life memories for everyone involved.
