No. 2 Thief River Falls (22-5) and No. 3 East Grand Forks (19-9) are set to battle for a spot in the championship, and this semifinal matchup could come down to a handful of key plays. With both teams fighting to keep their postseason runs alive, execution under pressure will be critical.

Whether it's a hitter finding ways to score against a tough block, a setter creating opportunities, or a defender extending rallies, individual performances could shift the momentum. Here are the players I'm keeping an eye on and why they could make the difference when these two teams take the court.

[player_tooltip player_id='803302' first='Riley' last='Brouse'] has plenty to bring into this semifinal after a big October that saw her reach 100 career service aces and 1,000 career digs just three days apart. Those numbers show how much she contributes to Thief River Falls, particularly in the backcourt. Against East Grand Forks, I'll be watching how Brouse reads the hitters, positions herself defensively, and controls her first contact to give her setter a chance to run the offense. Her serving could also be important in putting East Grand Forks out of system and limiting its attacking options. When rallies get longer and both teams are fighting for every point, Brouse's ability to stay disciplined defensively and turn tough balls into playable passes could be exactly what Thief River Falls needs. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='1059396' first='Jordyn' last='Skjerven'] is getting valuable varsity experience early in her high school career, seeing action in more than 60 sets and recording 39 assists this season. Her ability to play both setter and right side gives Thief River Falls some flexibility with its lineup heading into the semifinal. Against East Grand Forks, I'll be watching how she handles the faster pace of play, especially when the first pass pulls the setter off the net. Being ready to take the second ball, make a good decision under pressure, and keep the offense moving will be important. When she's on the right side, her positioning and readiness to attack could also give Thief River Falls another option. Skjerven may be one of the younger players on the floor, but her ability to fill different roles could be valuable when the match gets tight. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='1059400' first='Lila' last='Dalager'] has a big responsibility heading into this semifinal, especially against an East Grand Forks team that has been tough at the net all season. As the senior setter, she'll need to find ways to keep her hitters in good attacking situations rather than letting the Green Wave block settle in. I'll be watching how she uses different set locations and tempos to keep the defense guessing, particularly when the pass gives her multiple options. Her ability to recognize a late blocker, find the open pin, or go back to a hitter after a tough swing could be important. Dalager's experience will also come into play when Thief River Falls gets out of system and needs someone to make a smart decision with the ball. How she manages those situations could have a lot to do with how successful the offense is against East Grand Forks. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='763471' first='Brooke' last='Hecht'] is one of the players who could make life difficult for Thief River Falls hitters in this semifinal. East Grand Forks has put up 207 team blocks this season, and Hecht contributes to that success with her reach and ability to move along the net. What I'll be watching is how well she tracks the ball out of the setter's hands and gets lined up with the hitter before the attack. Her timing and ability to press over the net will be important, especially when Thief River Falls looks to attack the seams or use sharper angles. Hecht can also make a difference without getting credit for a block. A touch that slows down a hard-driven ball or forces a hitter to roll a shot gives the Green Wave a better chance to dig and transition into its own attack. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='728958' first='Coco' last='Williams'] could have a big say in how successful Thief River Falls is offensively in this semifinal. With 57 total blocks this season, she ranks third on the East Grand Forks roster and gives the Green Wave another strong option at the net alongside [player_tooltip player_id='1004083' first='Lanee' last='Hams'] and [player_tooltip player_id='763471' first='Brooke' last='Hecht']. What I'll be watching is her first step when the ball leaves the setter's hands and how quickly she can get into position without leaving a gap between blockers. Against outside hitters, closing that seam and getting her hands across the net will be important in taking away the hard cross-court swing. She'll also need to stay disciplined against hitters who change their approach or use the block to score. Williams doesn't have to put every ball straight down to be effective. Getting solid touches that slow the ball for her backcourt or forcing hitters into predictable shots can be just as valuable. If she can consistently make Thief River Falls work for its kills, Williams could be a major difference-maker in this matchup. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='913752' first='Giana' last='Oertwich'] is showing that being a freshman doesn't mean she can't contribute in big postseason moments. During East Grand Forks' opening playoff win over Red Lake, she converted four of her five attacks into kills without committing an error, giving the Green Wave a productive option when her number was called. Heading into the semifinal against Thief River Falls, I'm interested in seeing how she responds to a more challenging defense. Her shot selection, ability to recognize openings in the block, and confidence taking swings in tight situations will be worth watching. If Oertwich can bring that same level of control to her attacks, she could give East Grand Forks some valuable points at a critical time. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas
