6A Teams You Shouldn’t Sleep On

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The 6A landscape in Arizona is loaded with talent, and while a handful of programs tend to dominate the conversation, there are plenty of teams capable of making things interesting as the season continues. Records and rankings don't always tell the full story, especially when you factor in strength of schedule, close matches, injuries, young rosters, and teams that are simply starting to find their rhythm at the right time. We've seen enough volleyball at this point in the season to know there are some dangerous teams sitting just outside the spotlight. Here are six 6A programs you definitely shouldn't count out as we head into the next stretch of the season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In no particular order, here they are: </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Queen Creek</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Queen Creek's 7-9 record is very misleading. The Bulldogs have gone toe-to-toe with some of the toughest teams on their schedule, taking sets on the road from both Basha and Higley and battling Williams Field at home. They also opened the season with a notable victory over ACP, giving us an early glimpse of what this group is capable of. Queen Creek has pieces at every position and has already been through enough competitive volleyball this season to make them a team capable of giving opponents problems down the stretch. There is also plenty of youth in important roles, meaning this is a group with a lot of room to continue improving as the season progresses.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Junior <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='916676' first='Avery' last='Timmons']</strong> is a major piece of the offense and currently leads Queen Creek in kills per set while also making an impact from the service line. Sophomore libero <strong>Roxy DeWitt</strong> has taken on a huge role defensively and leads the Bulldogs in digs, while sophomore setter <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='891944' first='Brooklyn' last='Casoose']</strong> is running the offense and has already surpassed 250 assists. In the middle, sophomore <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1046626' first='Sophia' last='Harley']</strong> gives them another young piece to build around and currently leads the team in blocks. That young core is a big reason we're not sleeping on Queen Creek. The record may not jump off the page right now, but the talent and competitiveness are there. With the experience this group is gaining against quality opponents, Queen Creek could be a very different—and very dangerous—team by the end of the season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Williamsfield</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Williams Field has already shown us exactly why they belong in this conversation. This is a team with legitimate offensive weapons, strong ball control, and enough balance throughout the lineup to compete with some very good teams. Their recent four-set win over Queen Creek was another example of what they can do when everything starts clicking.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='730983' first='Peyton' last='Pearson']</strong> has been one of the biggest difference-makers. The junior outside has been producing at a high level all season and has already put together some big performances against quality competition. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='888932' first='Makenna' last='Mooney']</strong> has done an excellent job directing the offense and has surpassed 380 assists, while <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='830635' first='Brylee' last='Reidhead']</strong> has been a major defensive presence with more than 170 digs. <strong>Mia Andaya</strong> gives them another weapon in the middle and leads the team in blocks. There are multiple ways for Williams Field to score, and they have the defensive pieces to extend rallies and give those hitters more opportunities. This is a team we would not want to see across the net assuming their record tells the whole story.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Sunnyslope</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>If there is one team on this list whose record absolutely needs context, it's Sunnyslope. The Vikings have been thrown into an incredibly difficult stretch that has included matches against programs like O'Connor, Hamilton, Desert Vista and Xavier. They pushed Desert Vista all the way to five sets and have also picked up a win over Corona del Sol this season. Playing that level of competition night after night can expose weaknesses, but it can also prepare a team extremely well for the second half of the year.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Senior <strong>Vega Tunnell</strong> continues to be one of the most important offensive pieces for the Vikings, leading the team in kills per set while hitting around .300. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='889799' first='Lilli' last='Schmitt']</strong> has taken on the responsibility of running the offense and has surpassed 300 assists while also leading Sunnyslope in aces. Defensively, senior libero <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='845481' first='Emma' last='Easton']</strong> has been extremely valuable, averaging more than four digs per set, while <strong>Gianna Watson</strong> provides an important presence at the net and leads the team in blocks. Sunnyslope has experienced players in key positions and has been tested against some of Arizona's best. Their record may not jump off the page, but overlooking this roster because of it would be a mistake.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Higley</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Higley is another team where the win-loss column doesn't fully explain what is on the floor. At 6-9, the Knights have plenty of volleyball left to play, and there are some legitimate pieces on this roster that make them interesting. They have size, experience, and production spread throughout multiple positions, which gives them the ability to create difficult matchups.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Senior outside <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1046627' first='Taryn' last='Thelin']</strong> is a major player to know and has already recorded more than 150 kills this season. She also contributes from the service line, giving Higley production in multiple areas. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='888814' first='Kylie' last='Sherrill']</strong> has stepped into a significant role as only a sophomore and has already put up nearly 300 assists. Senior libero <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1046628' first='Addison' last='Thompson']</strong> is another huge piece of the puzzle, anchoring the defense with more than 240 digs, while junior <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1046630' first='Claire' last='Joslyn']</strong> gives the Knights another physical option at the net and has been one of their top blockers. There is a nice combination of veteran leadership and younger talent here, and if Higley can find consistency at the right time, this could become a difficult team to deal with.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. Boulder Creek </h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Boulder Creek has quietly put together stretches of really good volleyball this season, and we think there is more here than people may realize. The Jaguars have already shown they can string wins together, and their roster has several juniors taking on significant roles. That matters because this is a group that should continue improving not only throughout this season, but into next year as well.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1046631' first='Lila' last='Burkhart']</strong> has been one of the biggest pieces for Boulder Creek, leading the team in both kills and digs per set. Having an outside who can contribute that heavily on both sides of the ball gives the Jaguars a lot of value. Junior middle <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='888828' first='Laci' last='Noice']</strong> has also been efficient offensively and currently leads the team in hitting percentage. At the net, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1046632' first='Tarynn' last='Wilson-Tooyak']</strong> has provided an important blocking presence, while setter <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='945920' first='Layla' last='Bruhn']</strong> has made an impact running the offense and from behind the service line. This is a roster with several players capable of impacting different phases of the game, and that balance makes Boulder Creek an interesting team to continue watching.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">6. Westwood</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Westwood might be one of the easiest teams on this list to make a case for. The Warriors are sitting at 18-8 and have already collected wins over Queen Creek, Red Mountain, Gilbert and several other programs. They also pushed Basha to three sets in tournament play. They have shown that they can win consistently, and there is enough firepower on this roster to make them a legitimate problem for teams that overlook them.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Junior outside <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='916681' first='Kayla' last='Hawkins']</strong> has been a major part of that success and continues to establish herself as one of the more productive attackers in the 2028 class. She brings much more than offense, contributing defensively and from the service line as well. Westwood also returns experienced contributors like <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='806903' first='Nicole' last='Saavedra']</strong>, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='800691' first='Ada' last='Larsen']</strong>, <strong>Libby Brinkerhoff</strong>, and <strong>Mariah Martin</strong>, giving them experience across several positions. What stands out most about Westwood is that they don't need everything to come from one player. There are multiple athletes capable of contributing, and they've already shown they can grind through close matches and come out on top. At 18 wins and counting, Westwood deserves considerably more attention in the 6A conversation.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:separator --> <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" /> <!-- /wp:separator --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>We've officially hit the heart of the school season, and with the playoffs quickly approaching, there is still plenty of volleyball left to be played.
