The match was won by the Burns Hilanders who bounced back from a set one loss (17-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-9).
To recap the match, we will be identifying and highlighting players from each team that were impact players for the team. Although the Hilanders came out on top, the Bulldogs also had some athletes with great performances in the match.
SUTHERLIN HIGH SCHOOL
Makayla Murphy Makayla Murphy 5'7" | S North Douglas | 2023 State OR , 5’7”, OH, Sutherlin High School, Webfoot Jrs.

The junior outside hitter Murphy was a dominant force during the State finals for the Sutherlin High School Bulldogs. An offensive weapon for the team, she was the go-to attacker, taking the most swings out of anyone on the team at 42. The next closest was 24 swings by Rutledge. In the match, she racked up 16 kills on 42 swings, hitting .214, as well as 2 aces on 10, serves, 8 digs, a block, and passed an 8.08 on serve receive on 21 receptions.
Murphy received Moda Health Player of the Game, made Far West First Team All-League this season, and was on the 3A Second Team All-Star by PrepDig her sophomore season.
Last club season she played for Webfoot Jrs 16-1 Gold.
Murphy is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2023.
Tiana Murphy, 5’2”, S, Sutherlin High School

The senior setter for the Sutherlin High School Bulldogs, Murphy has run a 5-1 all season as the only rostered setter on the roster. She did an exceptional job running the offense during the State finals. In the match, she amassed 31 assists (and only one error), was 17/17 from the service line with 2 aces and had 9 digs.
Murphy was named to the 3A All-Tournament Team, was honored with Far West Setter of the Year, and made Far West First Team All-League this season.
Murphy is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2022.
Mallory Turner, 5’10”, MB, Sutherlin High School, Riverhawks VBC

The senior middle blocker Turner has shown dominant net play all season long for the Sutherlin High School Bulldogs. In the State finals, she had the best hitting percentage out of everyone on the team, with a .286, boasting an impressive 8 kills on 21 swings. She also had a block, 2 digs, was 6/6 from the service line with an ace.
Turner was honored with Far West Player of the Year, was named to the 3A All-Tournament Team, made Far West First Team All-League this season, and was named to the 3A Second Team All-League by PrepDig as a junior.
Last club season she played for Riverhawks 18-1 Fury.
Turner is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2022.
BURNS HIGH SCHOOL
Akylah Kaino Akylah Kaino 6'0" | OH Burns | 2025 State OR , 6’0”, MB, Burns High School, Burns Volleyball Club

The freshman phenom Kaino showcased stellar netplay as a middle blocker for the Burns High School Hilanders during the State finals. She had the best hitting percentage of anyone on the team, with an impressive .500 with 11 kills on 18 swings. Her blocking game proved challenging for the Bulldogs, with 8 blocks on the stat sheet for Kaino.
Kaino was awarded Eastern Oregon First Team All-League.
Last club season she played for Burns VBC 14-1.
Kaino is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2025.
Mackenzie King, 6’1”, OH, Burns High School

Six-rotation outside hitter King showed steady play offensively and defensively for the Burns High School Hilanders. In the match she amassed 15 kills on 37 swings, hitting a .378, 11 digs, and passed a .875 on serve receive on 7 receptions. Where she proved incredibly lethal was from the service line, posting an impressive 7 aces on 20 serves, and only 2 errors.
King was named to the 3A All-Tournament Team and made Eastern Oregon First Team All-League this season.
King is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2024.
Macy Temple, 5’2”, DS, Burns High School

The starting libero for the Burns High School Hilanders, junior Temple, was a critical part of the team’s success. In the match, she showed consistent play in the back row. She accumulated 16 digs, passed a .889 on serve receive on 16 receptions, had 3 assists, and was 18/19 from the service line with 3 aces.
Temple made Eastern Oregon Second Team All-League this season.
Temple is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2023.
Kaitlyn Wright, 5’9”, OH, Burns High School, Burns Volleyball Club

The senior all-around outside attacker Wright has been a steady force all season long for the Burns High School Hilanders, and the State championship was no different. A critical piece to the Bulldogs lineup, the team relied heavily on Wright. She hit an impressive .385 on 17 kills, with only 2 errors on 39 swings, had 12 digs, 2 blocks, a service ace, and passed a .923 on serve receive on 12 receptions.
Wright was named the Moda Health Player of the Game, was named to the 3A All-Tournament Team, was honored with Eastern Oregon Player of the Year, made Eastern Oregon First Team All-League this season, and was named to the 3A Second Team All-League by PrepDig as a junior.
Last club season she played for Burns VBC 18-1.
Wright is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2022.
