The culminating event for the CEVA club season is the Regional tournament. Taking place at the Portland Expo center across two days, hundreds of teams took the court to secure their final standing for the season. We were able to see some of the best athletes from Oregon and SW Washington compete and took note of the stellar performances we saw. We will be featuring those athletes who impressed us throughout the coming weeks.
Without further ado, here are the 2025 setters who had standout performances.
Crawford runs the Webfoot 16-1’s offense effectively, and her play during Regionals made her stand out as a setter. Crawford has great hands and a soft touch on the ball. That, combined with her quick footwork, helps Crawford place the ball in a great spot for her hitters consistently. Crawford is also an excellent defensive player, and on offense she shone during the tournament, making smart plays on two that frequently resulted in a point for her team.
Highlights
Leading her OJVA 16-2 team to a 5-0 weekend and a 1st place finish in the 16s Division was Geymann, whose natural competitiveness and energy on the court are unmatched. Not only are Geymann’s sets well placed, but she is also a smart setter who makes good choices on which of her attackers to set and when. And, from the baseline, Geymann proved to be quite deadly during Regionals with her tough jump serve.
Highlights
Hawk was a fun setter to watch during Regionals as she led her NPJ Portland 16-1 team to a 5-1 record and a 5th place finish in the 16s Division. Hawk moves seamlessly around the court to get her hands on nearly every pass. Combining nice hands with a soft touch, Hawk places the ball perfectly with each set, and she jump sets effortlessly and with great precision. Hawk’s confidence on the court really shone through during the tournament.
With Mia Hunt Mia Hunt 5’9″ | S Central Catholic | 2025 State OR unable to play in the tournament due to an injury, McGehee ran a 5-1 instead of the Athena 16-1’s usual 6-2 offense. Despite that change in the line up, McGehee played incredibly well during Regionals, showing her athleticism and consistency as a setter. Getting her feet to every ball, McGehee jump sets effortlessly to push the ball to either pin from anywhere on the court. She also mixes up her sets well, keeping opponents on their toes and getting each of her attackers involved in every game.
Highlights
With passion and energy, Mieren Sorenson did a great job leading her Chaos 16-1 team to a strong 11th place finish in the 16s Division during Regionals. Mieren Sorenson uses quick footwork and a soft touch on the ball to place it well for her attackers, making smart sets throughout matches. Mieren Sorenson is also a skilled defensive player and has a wickedly tough serve, adding further to her talent as a setter and all-around athlete.
Highlights
Mitchell showed why she is ranked as the #2 setter and #3 player overall for the Oregon class of 2025 during Regionals: She is super athletic, can play six rotations effortlessly, and sets with nearly perfect precision and consistency. Due to there being several injuries on her OJVA 16-1 team, Mitchell ran a 5-1 throughout the tournament weekend. Despite that change in the team’s offense (where, normally, Mitchell runs a 6-2 alongside Jackie Carle Jackie Carle 5’7″ | S Jesuit | 2025 State OR ), Mitchell played excellently. And, not only was her setting on point, but her aggressive net play also made her an offensive threat.
Highlights
Morrissette is another top ranked 2025 setter, and for good reason. Morrissette is an athletic, strong, and high-level setter who led her NPJ Salem 16 National team to a 10th place finish at Regionals in Open. She is skilled at pushing the ball from pin to pin across the court, throwing off opponents’ defense. Outside of Morrissette’s superb setting abilities, she is also a weapon when setting in the front row, given her height at 6’0”; Morrissette can put up a big block and make offensive plays when needed.
Highlights
Leading her G3 16-1 team to an impressive 7th place finish in Open, Schnell was a fun athlete to watch during Regionals. She is super quick, which helps her get to nearly every ball. With a soft touch and an effortless jump set, Schnell also has a great connection with each of her attackers, which helps her run her offense smoothly. Schnell is a strong defensive player, too, staying disciplined at base and making plays off hard driven or hard-to-reach balls. Schnell is a natural leader on the court, pushing her team to be competitive against some top notch teams.
