Elite Setters at Cross Court Classic 16 Open division

Volleyball was all over the place at the George R. Brown Convention Center, in downtown Houston, two weekends ago, as the venue hosted the 2025 edition of the Nike Cross Court Classic, one of the most traditional club tournaments of the year.   This year's edition featured 710 teams from all over Texas and neighboring states, which competed for two days in one of the 29 divisions of one of the largest tournaments held in Houston in 2025.   <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li><a href="https://prepdig.com/2025/03/nike-cross-court-classic-16-open-photos/">Nike Cross Court Classic: 16 Open - Photos</a></li> </ul>   Prep Dig Texas was in attendance on Saturday and we got to watch all eight teams that competed in the 16 Open division. Let's now review some of the top players in the age group, starting with the setters:    Contreras set for the SA Elite 161 Navy team that finished in second place with four wins and one loss. One of the most technical playmakers in the division, she made the most of her talented group of hitters, feeding the middles efficiently and displaying great connection with the pin hitters. Contrewas was very intelligent with how she shared the ball among all of them, keeping them involved, and remaining precise setting for each position. The setter also had a positive attitude on the court, helping keep her team in a good mood and avoiding pressure.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2025/03/2J4A0112.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-757796" /></figure>    Sanders appeared for the AP 16 Adidas team that finished in third place with three wins and two losses. Her setting duo with [player_tooltip player_id='289655' first='Lauren' last='Garcia'] was potentially the best in the division as the two did a great job of running the team's offense. Sanders was very creative when in system, consistently moving players around, but never lost accuracy, especially when setting to the pins. The setter was also a huge asset on the backcourt, serving efficiently and coming up with big digs at the right back position.      Martinez played for the [program_tooltip program_id='745880' first='Houston' last='Stellar'] 16 Elite team that ended up in sixth place with a win and four losses. The setter was forced to with passes off the net fairly often but still did a very good job of remaining accurate with her locations. Martinez was very successful at tracking passes and used her superior technique to get the ball in the best possible spot for her hitters to swing. She was also huge defensively, combining tremendous ball control and impressive effort to keep the ball off the floor.      Everswick was the starting setter for the Austin Skyline 16 Royal team that finished seventh with two wins and three losses. Despite her team's inconsistent performances, she stood out with how intelligent she was on the ball, making excellent decisions with her distribution and keeping all her hitters involved. Everswick was relentless when chasing passes off the net and did the best she could in out-of-system plays. She was a stud from the service line, registering some aces and consistently getting opponents out of system, and also contributed on defense.
