The Freshmen Bring it to the SoCal Exposure Tour

I've had the opportunity to attend and cover several Prep Dig events, and this one was particularly outstanding. The freshman talent showcased today stood out as some of the best I've seen as athletes were showing both skill and competitiveness. Their potential is well beyond their age. While this list isn't a complete list, the following players are some that caught my eye for one reason or another, whether it was their court awareness, impact on the court, or raw athleticism. This lefty pin is a vigorous offensive weapon who can take big, powerful swings from anywhere on the court—whether in the middle, from the pins, or even out of the back row. Her ability to attack effectively from anywhere on the court kept the opponents guessing. Her consistency, power and grit make her an automatic "go-to." With her aggressive play and and powerful attacking, she is dominate force on the court that any coach would wish they had.     Banks was easily one of my overall favorites of the tour. She is simply a "gamer" and does whatever is needed to help her team win. She is solid in so many ways—passing with consistency, setting with accuracy, and attacking with precision. However, what stood out the most about Banks was her speed and fluidity; she moves effortlessly around the court, makes big plays, and is composed at all times. Banks is a standout and so much fun to watch.     Faumuina is a player that is a true competitor with great court awareness that does whatever is needed for her team. As an attacker, she brings a big, heavy swing that puts constant pressure on defenses, but she is also willing to step in and take the second ball when needed. Her court awareness and reaction time is solid, allowing her to read plays and make quick movements and decisions. She also has a "toolbox" of shots in her competitive repertoire that she combines with her strong defense, making her a well-rounded and powerful player to have on both sides of the ball.     Short impressed me multiple times. So much so that I actually had her written down not only once in my book, but twice. As a setter, she demonstrated great placement and tempo. She consistently squared her hips, allowing her to deliver precise sets while keeping her opponents guessing as she is hard to read. On the flip side, she has a big, swift arm swing and attacks with power and accuracy. This not only makes her a highly effective and versatile, but someone that you want on the court at all times. She would be a valuable player on any team.     Chappell is a huge presence on the court. Not only because she is 6'3", but because she combines her big, powerful swing with quick reactions that allows her to take command on both offense and defense. At such a young age, she already has the ability to read the court effectively and adjust to quick plays. With her combination of power, height, and speed, she is a highly effective middle who is going to impact every play and challenge opposing team's hitters. This girl is going places and I can't wait to watch it all unfold.
