Players To Watch At Hoosier Regionals: 17U

President's Day/Triple Crown isn't done yet, why are we moving on so quickly? In our world, we're always looking ahead, and the most recent tournament with weight is this coming weekend at Hoosier Regionals. A ton of bids will be earned in Fort Wayne (18s) and central Indiana (11s-17s), with the latter winners earning the right to sleep in their own beds for GJNCs here in Indianapolis. Long, lean and fast, Milana is a solid M1/M2 hybrid that excels with a setter that understands speed and accuracy. A solid six-rotation attacker, she's known for hitting a consistently heavy ball that is tough to dig and even tougher to read. I'd like to see a little more lift in her legs on the attack, where she can REALLY take advantage of her size. She takes what the defense gives her, and uses court vision and a “slower” zero-tempo ball to give her time to find that gap in defenses. Swinging hard when she needs to, she's also capable of frustrating teams with her constant readiness to hit, repeatable arm swing and consistent play. Rhyan easily beats the lumbering middles with her quick transition and challenges double blocks by finding gaps in the floor defense. Able to hit any angle in any tempo and any area along the net, Miss Phillips prides herself on her athleticism and quickness to beat most blocks, and attacks high enough that bigger blocks get punished for being undisciplined. Miss Nelson does well going OVER blocks with her super high attack touch, and is more of an M2 at this time because of that fact. Consistently hitting high and deep in front of the setter, Madden's ability to make some blocks look obsolete is what she's known for. Transitionally quick and consistent in her repeatable arm swing, she's as hidden of a gem as you can be when you're 6'3” and from Westfield.
