The Great Plains barnstorming tour has added a southern stop.

Nebraska's top clubs have logged some worthwhile miles this club season. We've seen treks to Indianapolis, Kansas City, and Philadelphia result in GJNC berths for Great Plains competitors. Add Dallas to the list.

Yes, we've all heard that "everything's bigger in Texas." The cliche has been beaten to death, but it might still carry weight in the volleyball sphere. The annual Lone Star Classic draws a huge list of elite teams vying for bids, in addition to all the local Texas squads looking to defend home territory. Climbing the ladder in Dallas is a daunting proposition for visiting clubs, but this didn't deter Nebraska Juniors 17 Black.

This 17 Black lineup had already established itself as one of the best in the Nebraska Juniors gym. The roster has a fascinating medley of small-town stars and seasoned veterans from the Lincoln area. Nebraska Juniors found the right combinations in its 2027 talent pool to yield an exceptional achievement on the USAV circuit.

Our Nebraska Bid Tracker adds another heavy hitter with Nebraska Juniors 17 Black breaking through at the Lone Star Classic.

Outside Influence

The Lone Star Classic has a serious national pull on the qualifier calendar, but this year's 17 Liberty field had a remarkably local feel. Nebraska Juniors 17 Black came to Dallas as a rare "outsider" in this division.

17 Black was not deterred by the prospect of taking down a gauntlet of home-standing Texas teams. Even after an opening-match loss in Dallas, Nebraska Juniors toppled two Texas teams to advance past Friday's pools.

From there, we got a medley of emphatic sweeps and three-set struggles. Nebraska Juniors put itself on track for Sunday's Gold bracket by sweeping through its first two Saturday contests. 17 Black wasn't satisfied, however, and mounted a dramatic comeback against Roots to finish an unblemished second round.

Three 17 Liberty bids were in play as Nebraska Juniors focused its attention toward Sunday's Round of 16. This meant two wins were needed to stay in the hunt.

Step 1 was checked off following a straight-set win over Austin Skyline. Nebraska Juniors had now defeated five opponents from the Lone Star and North Texas Regions.

But the big quarterfinal contest came against a foe from the Sun Country side. TX432 17 Black backed Nebraska Juniors into a corner with a 26-24 Set 1 win in this crucial contest. Resilience would be tested yet again.

The visitors responded with back-to-back set wins to reach the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, KCV 17 Premier reached the final four as a previous 17 Liberty bid holder. The GJNC berth was in hand.

But why not go to the championship? 17 Black pushed past United VBA to advance one step further.

Lone Star's silver medal was heading out of state lines to the Great Plains Region.

Corner to Corner

Ervin

This feature has frequently alluded to trips and journeys, so let's take a jaunt around the Cornhusker State.

Nebraska Juniors 17 Black's roster has an impressive geographical footprint. Small-town stars play a big part in the team's success, making high-profile triumphs like last weekend's bid climb even more remarkable.

We can start our tour in Ogallala, where [player_tooltip player_id='498996' first='Alex' last='Ervin'] has consistently risen to prominence as an elite terminator. Her southpaw swing produced an astonishing 4.8 kills per set last fall, helping the Indians earn Class C1's top seed in the state tournament. Ervin has rekindled that dominance with 17 Black and is the team's go-to leader at the opposite position.

[player_tooltip player_id='458174' first='Sydni' last='Homolka'] is another pin hitter whose hard-hitting style produces big numbers on the prep stage. She has helped put Central City High School on the map and churned out over 300 kills last fall. Her multi-position influence with 17 Black has been something to behold, too. Homolka readily switches to the right pin to generate an unstoppable 1-2 combo with Ervin.

Let's stay in central Nebraska for our next two entries. Grand Island junior [player_tooltip player_id='828484' first='Lilly' last='Goodwin'] has had a consistent influence in the Nebraska Juniors gym. Her multi-sport stardom with the Islanders is matched by her wealth of accolades in the Nebraska Juniors uniform. Her positional range on the pins and in the middle set her apart among her 2027 peers.

Meanwhile, [player_tooltip player_id='458148' first='Olivia' last='Wiedel'] brings a similarly dynamic skill set to two very different positions. The Thayer Central junior has seen some of Nebraska's biggest prep stages, including the 2024 state title match. She carries a variable setter-opposite role with 17 Black and has reminded us of her poise in high-pressure situations. That hasn't changed since her underclassman years.

Thus, we end our journey in and around the Star City. Lincoln is getting plenty of hype for this one.

While the topic of positional adaptability is still fresh on our minds, we have to give a nod to Norris state champion [player_tooltip player_id='443105' first='London' last='Meints']. Meints enjoyed a tremendous breakout season last fall, anchoring the middle for Class B's best. However, she wields her pin prowess with Nebraska Juniors and has carved out a six-rotation niche in the starting lineup. She had her hands all over 17 Black's rise at LSC.

Engelbart

Meints' preeminence on the pin opens up opportunities for Lincoln Standing Bear junior [player_tooltip player_id='521265' first='Jayda' last='Engelbart'] in the middle. Like many of the frontcourt attackers we've discussed, Engelbart boasts vast experience at alternate spots along the net. She thrives as 17 Black's blocking centerpiece and has made huge strides as a transition attacker.

[player_tooltip player_id='575175' first='Suzanne' last='Riggins'] carries the banner for Lincoln Southwest. She has become the perfect complement to Meints on the left side, and this isn't limited to attacking. Riggins' pinpoint passing elevates everyone around her, and her defensive hustle is equally infectious. It's a perfect array of traits for a USAV qualifier full of grueling matches.

Now, we can conclude with some considerable high school synergy. Bring on the Spartans.

Lincoln East brings four athletes to the 17 Black roster. The Spartans form the foundation of the team's ball control unit, with [player_tooltip player_id='521295' first='Lena' last='Ward'] patrolling the libero spot and [player_tooltip player_id='510900' first='Raegan' last='Lehr'] running the show at setter. This duo has cemented 17 Black's meteoric improvement in first-ball situations, leading to clutch sideouts in Dallas.

Meanwhile, [player_tooltip player_id='521294' first='Maddie' last='Walsh'] and [player_tooltip player_id='809704' first='Katelyn' last='Krikac'] have bolstered the team's long, imposing front row. Walsh has been the group's 'M1' for multiple seasons, and her comfort in 17 Black's crossing patterns makes her difficult to defend. Even if Nebraska Juniors is in a three-hitter rotation, Walsh can still tee off behind the setter. This is also where Krikac adds to the offense as a middle-opposite "wildcard" athlete. Her move to the Nebraska Juniors is already paying off.

That payoff is a trip to club volleyball's biggest event this summer.

18 Open

Premier Nebraska 18 Gold - KC MLK

17 Open

[program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 17 Elite - NLQ

[program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Synergy - NEQ

17 USA

[program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Black - NEQ

17 Liberty

Nebraska Juniors 17 Black - LSC

16 Open

Premier Nebraska 16 Gold - MEQ

16 USA

VCNebraska 16 Elite - NLQ*

16 Liberty

VCNebraska 16 Black - NLQ

16 American

Club Legacy 16 Alpha - NLQ

15 Open

Premier Nebraska 15 Gold - MEQ

*update pending!
