Also from a family familiar with high-level volleyball, Caitlyn has spent many a PD Showcase presenting her well-rounded skill set to all in attendance. More aggressive on two contacts that most setters in this (or any) class, Miss Gutt can already run a 5-1 with a fast pin attack that’s hard to detect when her squad is in system. Her hands are also quite deceptive and, paired with her ability to go over on two, make her one of the toughest setters to read in this class.

Speaking of setters who kept their teams together, Caitlyn was tasked with doing just that against tougher-than-last-week competition. Regardless of the score, the outcome or the result of her and her teammates’ play, Miss Gutt was consistently the positive vocal force that setters need to be whether they’re the captain or not. I like the fast offense, the strong hands, and the ability to defend her position. This squad will be solid by mid-March, when tournaments REALLY start getting tough.

A regular at our showcases for the past couple of seasons, Caitlyn is probably the most offensive setter of the bunch listed here. When she sets, SHE’S in charge, and has the confidence and skill set to do it all for the offense she commands. Taller than the average setter here in Indiana, she’s played open-level ball for a few years now, and is more than capable of holding her own in a faster-than-average offense at that level. Although she’s the fourth setter listed here, I would not be surprised if she were one of the first off of the board for earning a commitment next summer.

Caitlyn is a veteran to our showcases, and understands the assignment when the drills and scrimmages start. Having that knowledge isn’t unlike her skill on the court—-she knows what needs to be done and how to do it, and gets it done. Period. High, deceptive hands, length on net defense and the ability to make every pass better are things that Miss Gutt does instinctually, which is not exactly something you can teach. I look forward to her open-level play this spring, as she’ll really be able to move her recruiting needle showing out under the brightest lights.

Athletic, active and offensive, Caitlyn has the size and skills to be a Division I setter. Her location is solid, her footwork is consistent, and her constant and consistent work in the gym has her as one of the better PLAYERS in the class of ‘28, let alone one of the best setters in that class. Although she might not be part of a sectional-winning program in high school, her club season is where she really stands out.

Light on her feet and quick with her deceptive hands, Caitlyn has spent a good part of her high school career hitting on the right side and setting. Her future is truly as a setter, but recruiters should know that she’s more than capable of both. As that coveted 5-1 setter, Caitlyn’s hands are highly deceptive and quick, forcing blockers to guess and leave holes for her attackers to crush balls into. Her size also allows her to take charge of scoring points whenever she chooses, keeping opposing defenses honest in the process. Her club season this past spring was a coming-out party for her and her skills, and she’s only getting better from here.

A solid, six-rotation setter is Miss Gutt’s calling card. She can run an offense, in tempo and accurately, to her laundry list of attackers at her disposal. Athletic and fast, Caitlyn can get to bad passes and make them better, turn good passes into in-tempo speed sets to the pins, and occasionally go over on two to score on her own. Maturing beyond a freshman’s expectations, Caitlyn is one of the clear front-runners for a setter to watch in this class as her career continues.

Already owning the size and footwork to run a 5-1 on her own, she can be part of any offense that’s willing to go fast and be physical. Caitlyn is also fully capable of going over on her own whenever she wants—the advantage of size and court awareness runs strong with her. I also like her blocking technique. For a lot of setters in this class, defense is an afterthought, but Miss Gutt can use her size and length to give opposing hitters fits. The future’s bright with this one, and we’ll be watching closely to her progress.

I got a chance to watch Caitlyn play on the JV squad at Fishers this past fall, and she did a little of everything—she set, she attacked, blocked, defended her position—she looked the part of a well-rounded, high IQ player. That acuity, as she gets older, will lead to more and more refinement of her actual position of setter, where she thrives in running a faster-than-average offense. She fit in nicely at the Expo with the bigger attackers that also wanted to go fast, but also adjusted well when the passes were not the greatest. With her continued work ethic, it would not surprise me if Caitlyn starts receiving recruiting interest THIS spring, her freshman club season.
