Maize South is rolling. The Mavericks rolled to an 8-0 start with several familiar veterans occupying the box score. Hargrove, however, brings some youthful representation from the sophomore ranks. Like Avey, Hargrove can flex between the setter and pin positions, giving Maize South plenty of options for its lineup card. She has dished out a smooth offense out of the back row as the Mavericks picked up one sweep after another in Week 1. This is a clear contender in the ultra-competitive Class 5A.

Hargrove had a strong day, in my opinion, both as a setter and an attacker on the right side, but we’ll focus on her setting duties for now. She was another young player who never looked rushed or uncomfortable running the offense. Hargrove showed good hands and consistently delivered hittable balls to different areas of the court. I also like the size she brings to the position, which gives her the ability to be aggressive on two and adds another dimension offensively. That size can also make her an asset at the net in the blocking game. Her combination of setting ability, size, and versatility gives her plenty of tools to continue developing at the position.

Maize South is one of the outstanding volleyball programs in the Southern Portion of Kansas. The Mavericks have an incoming freshman who could do big things for the program. Hargrove debuted in the Kansas Class of 2029 rankings in the No. 9 position. I saw her compete at the Keeper of the Plains club tournament in Wichita. She has solid defensive and hitting skills, which could lead her to be a six-rotation stalwart down the road for the Mavs.
