Expert Analysis
Kyp Harasymowycz | Prep Dig Scout
After a full club season largely hidden away on a Rev team last spring, Kyra has more than made up for last years’ slight by running the offense of Circle’s 18-1 squad, earning a bid to GJNC 18s in Reno. Her relentless work ethic, quick pursuit of every ball, and unending athleticism and stamina make her one of the better setters in this class, all while playing up a year and playing an open-level schedule to boot. I also like her location of each and every set regardless of where the ball is passed or what situation the offense needs to score points. She’s a coach’s captain on the floor, and is more than capable of running the show herself at the next level.

Playing up a year on Circle’s 18 Purple squad, Kyra finally gets her own club team to run after a full year as a backup at Rev. If you ever wanted a workhorse as your setter in a 5-1, Kyra’s who you should be recruiting. Willing to go through walls to get to every pass and rarely (if ever) calling for help, Miss Joostberns has the athleticism, smarts and hand strength to set any tempo ball to any location in any game situation. Earning a bid to GJNC 18s in Reno later this spring should test how far she’s progressed this season against bigger and more experienced competition. Something tells me she’s more than up for the task.

For an undersized setter, Kyra certainly doesn’t play like one. Able to get to practically every in- and out-of-system pass without complaint, Kyra’s ability to turn nothing into something helped her squad earn the National bid. Relentless in the gym and a never-ending work ethic, Miss Joostberns will find the best connection in every situation at all times, and always puts her hitters in a position to score points. She’s also tops in defending her position, unlike a lot of setters from Indiana.

Transferring over from Rev, Kyra’s finally earned the helm of an offense as the lone setter on Circle’s 18-1. Yes, she’s playing up a year, and looks as competitive and determined as ever to make her mark. With high hands, an athletic build and smart decisions, Kyra’s ability to keep her squad in each and every match despite some questionable passing will guide her well this season. Even while missing their top attacker, Kyra’s ability to find the hot hand and stay in tempo was great to see, and bodes well for her future.

One of two setters listed here, I’ve watched Kyra grow into an athletic and agile leader of the court over the past year plus. Her hands are high and strong, she can get to any out-of-system ball and make it better for her teammates, and was seemingly directing her team to winning drills regularly this past Saturday. The setter of a 5-1 has to be the whole package, not just “nice hands”. Kyra is all of that, and showed us what it looks like.

Joostberns led the way for the Wildcats this past high school season, setting for the varsity squad as just a sophomore and helping them to win a sectional championship. She racked up 743 assists over the season and was second on the team in both total aces and aces per set. What a blessing it is to have Kyra at the showcase seeing as she is currently ranked as the #3 setter for the class of ’27 and the 30th player overall for sophomores in Indiana.

Kyra showed her versatility and potential at the Expo. She was solid in every aspect of her game. Her setting was impressive, but so was her defense and court awareness. She was confident in her jump setting and fed all of her hitters. Kyra was a fun athlete to watch throughout the Top 250 Expo.
