Matea Maduagwu, talk about hang time at the net! A 2031 middle blocker for Alamo Volleyball definitely has the athletic ability for this game. It took a little bit of trial and error to find timing for such a big jump, but once the connection was made, Matea was aggressive and strong in her approach on the ball. Taking the time to communicate and adjust quickly, shed light on her ability to adapt as a teammate, in turn highlighting her intent to do well at her job in the middle. Her natural athleticism and drive to connect with setters will continue to be a big piece of her development as an up and coming player.

Matea moves through the offensive system in a way that tells you her size will be a valuable tool that a lot of coaches will love.  A middle blocker in the class of 2031 who already stands 5’9″ that is one of the more encouraging things an evaluator can observe. Her closing speed at the block was the first quality court coaches noticed at the Up Next San Antonio showcase and her ability to commit to the right direction without leaving her feet too early showed a player whose volleyball IQ is tracking ahead of her age. She attacked through the middle with authority and did not waste swings on low-percentage opportunities, which reflects a hitter who has been taught to read the block rather than just swing and hope. She competed with a physicality and genuine enthusiasm for the position that was visible from the first drill of the day and that combination of talent and attitude is exactly what earns a player a Top Performer award at this level.
