Roman Nixon always seems to be one step ahead, and that court awareness was on full display throughout the Freshman Showcase. She runs a great tempo offense, makes confident decisions, and plays with an understanding of the game that allows her to anticipate what needs to happen next. Rather than simply reacting to each play, Roman looks comfortable taking control of the offense and putting the athletes around her in positions to be successful.

Her connection with her middles was one of the first things that stood out to us. Roman wasn’t afraid to establish the middle early and continued finding ways to get them involved throughout the showcase. She delivered a consistent ball with great tempo, allowing her middles to stay aggressive and creating another element opposing blockers had to respect. For a setter working with unfamiliar hitters in a showcase environment, developing that connection so quickly was impressive.

She was equally intentional with her pins. Roman consistently communicated with her hitters and asked for feedback about the location and tempo they needed to be most successful. That willingness to listen, adjust, and figure out how to bring the best out of each individual hitter speaks volumes about her coachability and understanding of the setter position. Great setters aren’t just accurate—they learn what each hitter needs, and Roman showed that mentality throughout the day.

Roman is a great teammate and a young floor general with an exciting foundation already in place. We know she’s only going to continue developing as she gains experience at the high school level, and we expect her to be a name we’ll continue hearing for years to come.

A rising 2030 setter with strong defensive instincts, quality setting skills, and a competitive presence that stands out. She plays with a super strong foundation and moves extremely well for someone her age. She has a great feel for the game and seems to put the ball in the right spot on offense every time for her hitters. She remains a developing prospect, but the upside and foundation are there for her to eventually earn recognition within her class.
