We’ve been approaching our high school season previews from a variety of angles. Many of these articles have been based on position, and we’re bringing that motif back for this one. It’s time to spotlight some junior setters.
The Class of 2025 is about to be elevated to upperclassman status. Time flies. That experience pays huge dividends at the setter spot, as this position is involved in just about every rally you’ll ever see. They set their teammates up for success.
Now, we’re pivoting from the club season to the high school scene. It can be easy to get lost in the vast network of talented high school athletes, so let’s help break down a segment of it here.
These are a few junior setters that we’ll be watching when Nebraska’s high school season begins.
The Nebraska prep player who compiled the most total assists last season? That was Rennerfeldt. The Oakland-Craig prep star had over 1,100 helpers to her credit last year and has seen Nebraska’s biggest high school stages. Her freshman debut in 2021 couldn’t have ended much better, as Rennerfeldt helped the Knights to a historic state championship. Who knows what new bar Rennerfeldt might set for herself as a junior.
Some of Campie’s best moments have come in fall venues with Omaha Marian. She has been directing the offense since she was a freshman and tallied about ten assists per set in her 2022 campaign. Her work in the club season with Premier Nebraska has also proven that Campie can be a game-changing force on the defensive end, too. That versatility will keep flourishing as the Crusaders seek a repeat trip to Lincoln.
Wahoo has been somewhat of an elite setter factory lately. Waido is the next in line and has ample experience running the Warrior offense throughout her career. Her commendable skills were on full display with VCN 16 Black this spring, so we can expect Waido’s rise to continue into the upcoming fall season.
This is a big junior season for Banker. She had a hand in Skutt Catholic’s two-setter offense last season that eventually yielded an eighth consecutive state championship. The other setter in that equation, Ivy Leuck, has graduated. Will Banker step into a 5-1 setter role? Will she get some chances to attack, as we’ve seen with Nebraska Juniors? We’re ready to find the answers.
Like Banker, Nelsen is a dynamic setter who has never been afraid to embrace a secondary attacking role. This Premier Nebraska product was a high-impact addition to the Millard North lineup last fall and will remain a factor in the Mustangs’ 2023 pursuits. Indeed, Nelson is the kind of player that has us excited about how far Millard North can climb.
Potthoff had a phenomenal late-season charge during the 2023 club season with Premier 16 Black. That ought to be the perfect launching point to another prep season with Gretna, where Potthoff has already compiled plenty of matches as the team’s primary setter. Let’s see if Potthoff can help keep this history-rich program on the championship stage.C

The growth of central Nebraska volleyball clubs is helping us keep year-round tabs on talented athletes like Feeney. We already knew about her savvy setting with Adams Central, but her performances with South Central NE have elevated Feeney’s stock even further. Perhaps we’ll see another year of Feeney atop Nebraska’s assists leaderboards.

Craven was a frequent topic of discussion as she led Banzai VBC 16 Select to a GJNC appearance this summer. It’s no surprise to see this athlete have all-around success after she broke onto the prep scene with Ashland-Greenwood. Craven’s consistent distribution will allow the Bluejays maintain their winning ways.
Carlstrom is another one of those unique setter-hitters to make this feature. It’s hard to say for sure which role may take precedence for Carlstrom this year when she competes with High Plains Community, but it might be a little bit of both. This high-flying junior knows how to take over matches in almost any manner imaginable.

We’ll wrap up with a couple of Nebraska Pride athletes to add to your tally. Vaughn represents Holdrege on the prep side and amassed almost eight assists per set as a sophomore. Her commitment to constant improvement showed through her appearances with Nebraska Pride, so an uptick in production could be on the horizon.
Elfeldt was a recent addition to our 2025 radar and joined Vaughn on this year’s Nebraska Pride Black 16s roster. Her setting services this fall will be for Sutherland, a team that has slowly been climbing the ladder in the small-town scene. Setters like Elfeldt can establish a foundation for success well into the future.
