I ended a busy week of high school volleyball in the Houston area on Friday, making the trip to Stratford High School, where the Spartans faced the Clear Springs Chargers in a non-district match.
It was an excellent match, with both teams demonstrating they’re set for strong seasons, but Stratford took care of business at home, winning 3-1 (25-21, 11-25, 25-21, 25-13) to improve their season record to 10-1. The Chargers are now at 9-3.
Top Performers
Chloe Popkin

Stratford experimented quite a bit at the pins until they found the formation that allowed them to take control of the match and Popkin was the player that brought more on the position. The explosive outside hitter was the team’s most used and most realiable offensive option, using power and finesse to put the ball down against a strong Clear Springs team. She played with a lot of energy and positively influenced her teammates in difficult moments. Popkin was also very stable on the backcourt, passing well and getting good touches on defense, and also had good moments with her serving.
Izzy Rodriguez
Izzy Rodriguez
Lifted to the team’s starting libero role this year, Rodriguez was among the top players on the court for the Spartans. She displayed great command of the backcourt, leading the team’s passing efforts and remaining very active on the backcourt during the entire match. She made several digs from her left position and was always in position to help teammates when their ball control wasn’t perfect. Rodriguez also did an excellent job of covering her hitters, recovering several balls this way, and was always precise and consistent when she had to set in transition.
Cook had some early struggles, but displayed great mental strenght to find her best game and play a pivotal role in Stratford’s victory. The sophomore setter found her rhtym during the match and improved her ball distribution, turning to the team’s main hitters whenever she felt the need to and displaying better chemistry with them. Cook also came up big with some incredible digs at the end of the fourth set and was able to create issues to Clear Springs’ passers with her tricky serve.
Highlights
Clear Springs’ top player played like that and was very involved with the team’s game against Stratford. Richardson was excellent in her her dual role of setter/right side hitter and was very effective in all of her actions. Her ball distribution and precision were excellent during the entire match and she also rose to the occasion offensively, getting the ball in key moments of sets and having some of the biggest swings of the match. Robinson also did some very good digs and got a couple of blocks.
Caylee Young
Caylee Young
A freshman, Young indicated she could be the player Clear Springs will build their team around in the next several years. Tall and athletic, she also displayed a very complete skill set, remaing stable with her passing during the entire match and creating problem to Stratford’s hitters with her big block. Young got off the floor well and made contact with the ball at a very high point, but was also great when it came to seeing the game across the net and hitting around the block or tooling it when she needed to.
Myah Griggs

Clear Springs’ dynamic middle played with a lot of energy and made her presence felt at the net. Although a bit undersized, she battled with taller opponents and made their lives difficult with her ability to get off the floor quickly and go very high up at thet. Griggs had a good hitting efficiency and also got some blocks, coming out of nowhere to shut opponents down.
