Continue ReadingLast weekend was not a business trip for me. I didn’t want to miss a second of our daughter’s 13U team in action. That’s why I attended the KC qualifier Weekend 2.
Now, we all know that comes with down time. Plenty of opportunity to watch other squads from Iowa. They just had to be at the same facility as our 13U during the same session. That worked out OK for two of the three days.
The outfit I saw the most in that setup was the CIA 15U. Most of these volleyballers are freshman in high school. Some of them have varsity experience.
This group played well together. You could tell they were connected and fed off of each other. It added up to a second-place finish in the American Division after a three-set loss to 417 Columbia in the title match.
CIA fields some intriguing prospects with potential to play at the next level. That group is led by exciting two-way middle Kyla Ramler Kyla Ramler 6'0" | MB Western Dubuque | 2027 IA from Epworth Western Dubuque. She’s explosive and athletic with a great feel for the game.
Ramler delivered 77.0 blocks and 112 kills as a freshman this past fall. Setter Tayah Pollock Tayah Pollock S Janesville | 2027 IA also thrived as a ninth-grader with 867 assists for Janesville. She showed accuracy and consistency this past weekend.
Kennedy Krecklow Kennedy Krecklow OH Cedar Falls | 2027 IA and Kylee Pexa Kylee Pexa 5'8" | OH Dunkerton | 2027 IA stood out as all-around performers. The former spent her freshman season of 2023 in the Cedar Falls’ rotation, producing 51 kills, 39 digs and 6.0 blocks. The latter cranked out 259 kills with 230 digs as a Dunkerton ninth-grader.
Pexa can hit outside but performed better on the right side when I was watching. She’s quick and technically sound in the back row. Krecklow swung well from the outside and displayed good instincts playing the back row.
South Hardin’s Emma Minteer Emma Minteer 5'9" | OH South Hardin | 2027 IA showed off a promising swing and good timing in defending the net. Carlea Dagel Carlea Dagel 5'8" | MB Iowa Falls Alden | 2027 IA made sure opponents didn’t get any relief when she rotated in for Ramler. The freshman chipped in with 117 kills and 117 digs for Iowa Falls-Alden last season.
