The California High School volleyball season is now upon us. Everyone is practicing hard to solidify their lineups in order to chase the ultimate prize, a State Championship. There have been some big tournaments that have happened over the past few weeks and we are already starting to see some fireworks. Let's take a closer look at who is standing out for these teams on the rise.

Coronado Islanders

Who says that a young team cannot do the impossible and beat older more experienced squads? The Islanders have some young talent who are blazing hot right now. They currently sit at 11-1 overall and are led by some underclassmen. Super stud sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='739155' first='Ashlynn' last='Proctor'] is the big gun who cannot be stopped right now. She has triple the amount of kills than anyone else on the team and not only that, but she is hitting at a whopping .423 hitting percentage, which is phenomenally efficient. [player_tooltip player_id='781271' first='Emily' last='Albin'] has stepped up to the plate and is stacking kills of her own. She is also only a sophomore like Ash and both cannot be stopped. Outstanding freshman Brooke Proctor stands tall at five foot ten and is leading the way both as setter and right side attacker when needed. The front line of those three are proving to be a tough out for anyone that tries to match up. Senior Lydia Schutt is also providing some great hands and quality digs for Coronado. The first line of defense are the senior middle blockers Madison Davis and Ariana Van Handel. This duo has been a great wall as they lead in total blocks. If this team is to go far, these seniors, along with libero [player_tooltip player_id='506575' first='Avalon' last='Haro'], will need to use their experience and guide the underclassmen as much as possible. Great team chemistry will go a long way if this team is to continue their winning ways for the remainder of the season. We will be watching and you should also.

Xavier Prep Saints

In this day and age of big guns, it is very uncommon for a team to have a well balanced offensive scheme where everyone is eating at the table. This is exactly what we see so far with Xavier Prep. Early in the season, most coaches are trying out different lineups to see what works for the deep playoff run. Every single hitter on this lineup is scoring the ball very well and has some impressive numbers. Senior pin attacker Lyla Barkett has been very impressive so far this year as she leads the team in kills. She has tons of help in Gracie Frederick, Grace Thomsen, [player_tooltip player_id='811796' first='Brynn' last='Campbell'], Emma Thomsen, and Annabel Frederick. All six players are in double figures with kills for the year. That is great balance and kudos to the setters for moving the ball around to all of them. That kind of spacing with the offensive scheme will keep the defense guessing and not able to cheat to one specific side. This has to be the main reason why this team is 11-1 on the year and not looking to slow down. Junior setter Annabel Frederick is playing exceptionally well while she dishes the rock. With 266 assists, 7.6 assists per set, and only 5 total ball handling errors in 35 sets played, this squad is quite literally in great “hands” with Miss Frederick. Junior libero Arianna Padilla is doing her thing in the back row while leading the entire team in digs. We are loving how they are playing and will be keeping a close eye on them as the season progresses.
