They beat Perkiomen, a team from Pennsylvania and then the Riverside Junior Varsity to get into a championship match with St. Johns. They swept St. Johns in two 25-21 and 25-20. St. Johns had defeated Westfield and Independence to get into the championship match.

[player_tooltip player_id='529439' first='Jasmine' last='McBorrough'] was unstoppable from the left side in the first set. She collected two early kills to put Heritage up 3-0. They never looked back. When it appeared St. Johns was getting close Jasmine came through with another kill to keep the lead intact.

In the second set libero [player_tooltip player_id='443558' first='Emily' last='Kolas'] strung together a number of aces and [player_tooltip player_id='582293' first='Shannon' last='Treloar'] was a force up the middle, burying quick tempo sets and rejecting to the floor numerous St. Johns attempted spikes. She completed three tip kills into an open "4" area that St. Johns kept leaving vacant. A final tip kill into that spot put them up 24-20 and a St. Johns hitting error finished off the match 25-20.

Setters [player_tooltip player_id='325403' first='Annabelle' last='Kim'] and [player_tooltip player_id='490057' first='Avery' last='Lefman'] combined to run an efficient offense. They mixed it up really well, pushing it out to Jasmine while keeping the other hitters active. The tournament win felt nice after the Pride lost their first two matches of the year to Briar Woods and Potomac Falls.

St. Johns possesses a powerful offense if the passing can stay on point. With outsides [player_tooltip player_id='238356' first='Morgan' last='Reeves'] and [player_tooltip player_id='437988' first='Sasha' last='Plummer'] combining with middles [player_tooltip player_id='828185' first='Cairo' last='Turner'] and [player_tooltip player_id='530367' first='Ava' last='Gill'] they can accumulate points. When setter [player_tooltip player_id='221032' first='Wynn' last='Mendez Eaton'] can set the ball within the ten foot line the offense is dangerous. Unfortunately, against Heritage the passing was not there.

A number of frosh stood out during the tournament for Heritage and St. Johns. For Heritage [player_tooltip player_id='765187' first='Chelsea' last='Kolas'] played a solid back row coming in for [player_tooltip player_id='529439' first='Jasmine' last='McBorrough']. It would not surprise me to see her occupy the libero spot next year. For St.Johns [player_tooltip player_id='884163' first='Nika' last='Fackel'] hit well from the right side putting a number of balls down. She appears to be the starting right side for the Cadets. [player_tooltip player_id='884164' first='Vivien' last='Eaton'] saw some time at libero and as a defensive specialist while [player_tooltip player_id='884166' first='Beatrice' last='Bradburn'] saw some time as a defensive specialist. Both are listed as setters as well.

Other Big Matches from Last Week

[player_tooltip player_id='716365' first='Skyler' last='Riley']

Langley looked strong in their sweep of Chantilly. It should be noted that [player_tooltip player_id='377344' first='Julia' last='Horan'] was on the bench the whole match. Without her in the middle the Saxons took advantage with 25-16, 25-15 and 25-15 routs. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='608978' first='Francise' last='Ramirez'] appears to have won the left side position vacated by Ana Toumazatos graduation. At 5'6" she may lack the height of Ana but she brings an impressive jump that gets her high over the net. Her arm swing is also fast to the ball. [player_tooltip player_id='554770' first='Rujuta' last='Singh'] put up two solo blocks in the first set while Valentine Joelson finished off the first set with four aces.

[player_tooltip player_id='554770' first='Rujuta' last='Singh'] finished off the second set with two kills, one buried down the line while the other was a cross court deep corner shot. [player_tooltip player_id='739977' first='Elizabeth' last='Hemberg'] and Jordan Glover combined for a monster block on the right side while [player_tooltip player_id='608978' first='Francise' last='Ramirez'] blitzed Chantilly with a nasty shot from the back row to put them one away from victory. Ruuta finished the match off with a kill.

[player_tooltip player_id='716365' first='Skyler' last='Riley'] hit some bombs from the left side for Chatilly while [player_tooltip player_id='455102' first='Erin' last='Green'] was active from both pins. Unfortunately, their effort fell short. Langley now moves to 6-0 while Chantilly drops to 3-1.

[player_tooltip player_id='754650' first='Madison' last='Meiring']

Oakton looked good in their match against McLean, taking four sets to seal the victory. It was an early senior's night so all the seniors got to play but the underclassman shined the brightest. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='465321' first='Marissa' last='Turek'] led the team with 13 kills while frosh [player_tooltip player_id='754650' first='Madison' last='Meiring'] contributed nine. Junior middle [player_tooltip player_id='814457' first='Jocelynn' last='Kinlaw'] also strung together 9 kills. Jocelyn plays basketball for Oakton but her play in the middle was impressive. At 5'9" she is a bit undersized for middle but she flies over the net. Frosh [player_tooltip player_id='756342' first='Olivia' last='Baick'] stood out for her 7 digs and 5 aces.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='754931' first='Abigail' last='Hegg'] got the libero call for the whole match and led the team with 14 digs. Another senior, setter [player_tooltip player_id='238857' first='Julie' last='Xu'] dished out 35 assists while setting a 5/1. Finally, a third senior outside [player_tooltip player_id='834573' first='Lauren' last='Guggenmos'] hits the ball hard but her main contribution was in her serving with 5 aces.

McLean senior outside [player_tooltip player_id='830221' first='Bay' last='Briceno'] hits the ball hard. At 6'1" [player_tooltip player_id='833808' first='Katherine' last='Warrell'] has impressive height for a left side. She could put the ball away during hitting warmups but still needs work transitioning to put herself in a position to hit during the game. She played club for MOJO and could be a better fit at right side.

In a battle between two Class 3 powerhouses Christiansburg took four sets to defeat Liberty Christian. [player_tooltip player_id='845472' first='Emily' last='Cook'] finished with 23 kills while [player_tooltip player_id='722276' first='Kenstin' last='Phelps'] added 14 in a losing effort.

It took five sets but Kellam was able to take down Ocean Lakes in a battle of the Beach, surviving the last set for the 15-11 win. [player_tooltip player_id='484970' first='Sofia' last='Barnes'] won the MaxPreps player of the match award.

James Wood put together a nice sweep over Sherando. The Warriors dropped to 4-1 while the Colonels improved to 7-0. [player_tooltip player_id='181302' first='Kennedy' last='Spaid'] led the team in kills with 14 while [player_tooltip player_id='806216' first='Kyla' last='Wilhelm'] contributed 10.

Frank Cox needed to win the last two sets to take down Norfolk Academy in five. Cox took the final set 15-12. For Norfolk this was their first loss of the season. Cox improved to 7-3.

Colgan took down Flint Hill in four to improve to 3-1, although all their Virginia Showcase wins have yet to be recorded. For Flint Hill this was their first loss after an impressive win over St. Johns in their opener.

Richard Montgomery played their opener beating Churchill in five. [player_tooltip player_id='833815' first='Katherine' last='Mitchell'] did not hold back on her arsenal unleashing 24 kills while her sister [player_tooltip player_id='412056' first='Elizabeth' last='Mitchell'] added 11. A new addition from Southern Virginia [player_tooltip player_id='557876' first='Kinsley' last='Flores'] proved her worth in the middle with seven blocks, four of them solo. [player_tooltip player_id='749346' first='Ellyn' last='Kim'] set a 5/1 dishing out 35 assists.

North Stafford Wins King George Tournament

Photo: April Canty, North Stafford

North Stafford made it back to back by winning the King George tournament for the second time. However, winning this year created a special emotion since this is supposed to be a rebuilding year. They also did it with UNC Pembroke commit [player_tooltip player_id='221415' first='Lindsey' last='Canty'] playing libero rather than her usual left side position. The 5'10" outside has always been a six rotation player but the libero play gives her versatility prior to entering the college season next year.

Playing outside in her place were a combination of [player_tooltip player_id='466369' first='Cailin' last='Connors'], [player_tooltip player_id='829680' first='Arianna' last='Mancari'] and [player_tooltip player_id='564347' first='Savannah' last='Gray']. [player_tooltip player_id='290419' first='Sanai' last='Jones'] and Kairi Padilla shared the setting responsibilities while [player_tooltip player_id='808096' first='Sascha' last='Cotton'] and [player_tooltip player_id='722921' first='Mya' last='Johnson'] replaced them in the front row to provide some offense on the right side.

North Stafford came into the tournament a little down after being swept by Colonial Forge. This is a nice bounce back win for them.
