Philadelphia's Liberty Bell chimes for the Great Plains Region.

This was a long time coming for [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Synergy. Last year's 16s crew came agonizingly close to an Open bid at multiple USAV venues. Synergy then proved its postseason worthiness through a deep bracket run at AAU Nationals, setting the stage for a reset in 2026. [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] would not be denied this time.

The Northeast Qualifier drew an unprecedented volume of Midwest competitors last weekend, and 17 Synergy showed no ill effects from a longer travel trek. Instead, the team's elite form flourished to lock up another summer trip to Indianapolis.

Add a GJNC stop to the tour.

Dominance and Drama

Philly brought a "tale of two rounds" for 17 Synergy.

Opening day brought some of [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE']'s most dominant volleyball. 17 Synergy advanced to Round 2 behind a trio of sweeps over 305VBC, SIVBC, and VA Juniors. Resistance was bound to escalate for Saturday's slate, but this was a promising start.

Cue the drama. The Great Plains crew suffered its first set loss of the weekend in Round 2's opener against MAVS 17 Elite. Fortunately, 17 Synergy rebounded to win the next two sets to keep its unblemished record alive and begin Round 2 on the plus side.

This was only the beginning of [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE']'s gauntlet of pressure tests. The team was forced to rally from another opening-set defeat in the following match against Metro. 17 Synergy answered the call again. Finally, in a fitting end to Saturday's pools, [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] secured a heart-stopping 24-22 triumph in the third set against Paramount to finish 3-0 in the round. You might as well maximize your Philly trip, right?

And did we think the drama would wane in Sunday's Gold pools? Of course not. 17 Synergy slugged through its fourth consecutive three-set match in the morning debut against 1United. The winning trend held firm with a 15-9 win in the tiebreaker.

From here, 17 Synergy's path to an Open bid became clearer. NEQ's Gold pools already had two previously qualified squads in the mix, allowing for several trickle-down scenarios and contingencies.

But [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] was not interested in relying on others to seal the deal. 17 Synergy finished on its own terms. Obviously, the tides were turned with yet another three-set win against PineappleHP to lock up a 2-0 record. Two Open-qualified teams joined 17 Synergy in the quarterfinal bracket, so the bid was in hand.

Why not go one step further? [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] climbed to the championship bout with a sweep over Winter Park in the final bracket. Although 17 Synergy was finally tripped up by SoCal's LOVB group, a runner-up finish has made amends for a trial of close calls in 2025.

Spinning the Dial

This year's 17 Synergy lineup features a medley of new and familiar assets.

[player_tooltip player_id='445956' first='Reagan' last='Wallraff']

The core group is largely intact from last year. Nebraska commit [player_tooltip player_id='458117' first='Malorie' last='Boesiger'] pilots an offense predicated on quick tempo and low-error termination. Boesiger has not missed a beat since she returned from injury last summer. Her all-around game at the setter spot establishes the standard for everyone else to follow.

And this star-studded cast has answered the call. [player_tooltip player_id='445956' first='Reagan' last='Wallraff'], a Creighton-bound attacker with multi-position influence, has embraced her role as a six-rotation go-to for [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE']. We aren't far removed from Wallraff's dominant tenure as a middle blocker, but she's now a full-time pin hitter with influence in every rotation.

Positional flexibility has become a prevailing theme for this 17 Synergy group. This conversation isn't complete without [player_tooltip player_id='458167' first='Delainey' last='Volkmer'], one of the new additions to the crew. Volkmer put up all-state attacking numbers with Lincoln North Star last fall, lifting the Navigators to a historic season on the Class A circuit. However, her ball control prowess has taken precedence through several libero appearances with 17 Synergy. Volkmer has seen her share of club opportunities as an attacker, but her willingness to don the contrasting jersey has added a layer of complexity to the [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] operation.

[player_tooltip player_id='458161' first='Aubree' last='Fettin'] and [player_tooltip player_id='521273' first='Makenna' last='Bowman'] bolster this unit further. Like Volkmer, Fettin has become an elite Class A outside hitter on the prep side. But she also thrives in the back row and can slot into any DS spot for [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE']. Bowman, meanwhile, is a game-changing junior setter with ample experience in defensive roles, too.

[player_tooltip player_id='572006' first='Reese' last='Wallraff'] adds to the cascade of backcourt talent. She enjoyed a breakout sophomore season with Elkhorn North en route to the Wolves' runner-up finish in Class B. Wallraff played a key role in another runner-up effort--this time, with many of the Norris players she faced for last year's Class B title.

Thayer-Mencke

Speaking of Norris, [player_tooltip player_id='739707' first='Loryn' last='Piening'] remains a frontcourt force in the [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] gym. Her year-round connection with Boesiger has yielded extraordinary results, highlighted by her 0.400-plus hitting percentage with the Titans last fall. Piening gets the job done in front of the setter and behind, so opposing blockers face daunting challenges with this 2028 prospect at the net.

And we're not done with the 2028 prospects. We can pivot to [player_tooltip player_id='555495' first='Shayla' last='Rautenberg'], our top-ranked overall athlete in Nebraska's Class of 2028. The Milford superstar has had a busy spring, which included a state basketball championship and a wealth of other accolades. Nothing can slow Rautenberg's momentum, and her return to the volleyball court has been seamless. This is a true game-changer.

The small-town theme persists as we address the final three contributors to the 17 Synergy effort. Pierce junior [player_tooltip player_id='808069' first='Nora' last='Herian'] has maintained her familiar role as a crosscourt hammer at the left-side hitter spot. Her pass-to-attack skills have also developed, allowing 17 Synergy to mix up its serve-receive pattern at any time.

Reintroducing [player_tooltip player_id='458060' first='Reagan' last='Meyers'] to the lineup might have been the final piece to 17 Synergy's Open climb. Meyers missed most of the 2025 season due to injury and had a long journey back through the rest of the calendar year. That hard work has paid off to yield the same floor-denting kills we've come to expect from the Superior middle blocker.

[player_tooltip player_id='458185' first='Emilee' last='Thayer-Mencke'] carries the banner for Fort Calhoun. We've already seen tremendous growth out of this southpaw opposite during the spring grind. She sees the block well and has a knack for finding open windows along the antenna. [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE']'s pace brings out the best in this Class of 2027 gem.

And, somehow, a long hike to the Liberty Bell brought out the best in [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'].
