Even a historic blizzard could not quell VCNebraska 16 Elite's avalanche of momentum.

The Northern Lights Qualifier brings its share of unique challenges, never mind the multiple feet of snow ravaging the Twin Cities last weekend. But, if there's any team primed to tackle Minneapolis' obstacles, it's VCN 16 Elite.

2025 set the standard. Last year's VCN 15 Elite group trekked northward and locked up its GJNC plans with a runner-up finish in NLQ's 15 USA division. However, this wouldn't be the last of 15 Elite's bid-earning triumphs. VCNebraska upgraded from USA to National through its championship run at the Great Plains Region Bid Tournament. This allowed us to see 15 Elite hone its skills at the Open level at the Show Me Qualifier. Raising the bar is in this team's identity.

That identity hasn't changed a year later. VCN 16 Elite looked for an encore performance in Minneapolis. A flurry of victories got the job done.

The Nebraska Bid Tracker has had a busy week, and VCN 16 Elite is storming into the conversation with another podium climb at NLQ.

Accumulating Victories

VCNebraska 16 Elite's NLQ success snowballed quickly.

The lone Great Plains crew in NLQ's 16 USA division flexed its might in the first two rounds of pool play. VCNebraska rolled to a 6-0 start and did not drop a set until the Saturday finale against Kokoro. This perfect run secured 16 Elite's spot in Sunday's Gold quarterfinals, where a bid would be tantalizingly close. With three bids available in the USA field, VCN would need to win its Sunday debut and add one more 'W' to the column to secure a bid.

Step 1 in the process was a roaring success. An intense morning bout with Dallas Skyline ended with a 25-23, 25-23 decision in VCN's favor. For the second consecutive season, the Lincoln gang was in the final four in Minneapolis.

However, 16 Elite faced its first major adversity of the weekend after falling to Minnesota's VOLT 16-1 in the semifinals. So, despite VCNebraska's 7-0 start, the team needed to regroup in the third-place match to lock up the last USA bid.

Circle City 16 Black was the final obstacle. The two contenders went back and forth, extending the match to a third-set tiebreaker. Poise under pressure was about to reach another level.

In a remarkable conclusion to a weekend flurry of action, VCN 16 Elite won a 16-14 third set to get the job done. If last year is any indication, this may not be the end of VCN's bid evolution.

But it's a great start.

Covering lineups like VCN 16 Elite helps fuel our enthusiasm for this time of year. This Lincoln-based club draws a unique medley of athletes from around the Cornhusker State to form its star-studded 16 Elite roster.

Small-town schools have produced big-time performers on the national stage for 16 Elite. It all starts at the left-side hitter spot, anchored by [player_tooltip player_id='593775' first='Ava' last='Janulewicz'] and [player_tooltip player_id='568816' first='Kyler' last='Cada']. Janulewicz hails from Grand Island Northwest and is fresh off a 400-plus kill season with the Vikings last fall. This six-rotation gem can score in bunches, but Janulewicz's ball control skills have provided further upgrades to 16 Elite's operation.

Liekhus

Cada has been equally influential. Her 2025 offensive production with Bishop Neumann was nearly identical to Janulewicz's tab, and both play with a similar high-flying style that resembles many other VCNebraska hitters.

Aurora High School gets in the mix along the net, too. [player_tooltip player_id='702898' first='Elizabeth' last='Luebbe'] has flourished as a right-side terminator and gives 16 Elite a major scoring threat behind the setter. NLQ also highlighted Luebbe's vast defensive contributions as a wing blocker who could shut down Open-level left sides.

We might as well bring North Bend Central into the fray. [player_tooltip player_id='575226' first='Isabelle' last='Liekhus'] carries the banner for the Tigers and is bringing her best career attacking efficiencies with VCN 16 Elite this spring. Early-season events have also revealed Liekhus's ability to anchor the 'M1' role and deliver dimes from behind the service line.

16 Elite's small-town influence expands beyond Liekhus at the middle blocker spot. York High School's [player_tooltip player_id='662829' first='Sydney' last='Jacobsen'] has boosted 16 Elite's physicality after putting down nearly 400 kills last fall. This multi-position standout has made her versatility a talking point as we evaluate Nebraska's 2028 stock risers.

We have a double dose of rural pull at the setter position. [player_tooltip player_id='758622' first='Taegan' last='Weber'] became Seward's leading setter around the dial as a sophomore and is particularly strong in three-hitter rotations. She shares the spotlight with Norris' [player_tooltip player_id='838311' first='Karsyn' last='Vejraska'], a Class of 2029 star who dishes with incredible pace even while off the net. Weber and Vejraska combine to deliver the quickness and consistency we've come to expect from VCNebraska's signal-callers.

While we're visiting Norris, we can give a shoutout to another Titan 2029 logging game-changing ball control reps for 16 Elite. [player_tooltip player_id='775339' first='Makinley' last='Ramsey'] climbs the age ladder to don the libero jersey and command the VCNebraska backcourt. Her sprawling defensive plays are always highlight-worthy, but Ramsey has also stepped up the "routine" plays, like secondary setting and serve-receive. This was especially important at NLQ, where lethal serving was commonplace.

That was a long foray on Nebraska's small-town circuit, but we still have Star City standouts to address. This group includes [player_tooltip player_id='737394' first='Sydnie' last='Cain'] and [player_tooltip player_id='774597' first='Reese' last='Pedersen'], a pair of Lincoln Standing Bear sophomores who have steadily climbed the 2028 rankings. Cain switches from the left to the right pin for 16 Elite, demonstrating her willingness to do anything necessary to bolster the team's net presence. Pedersen, meanwhile, operates in the back row and has shouldered nearly every DS role imaginable for 16 Elite.

Our trek concludes with Lincoln Pius X, where [player_tooltip player_id='766750' first='Ofeleia' last='Ramirez-Rousseau'] has made her name as a multi-sport showstopper. Her niche on the volleyball court is at middle blocker, and her adaptability extends to the routes she's able to run with VCNebraska. 16 Elite's 'gap' schemes are a perfect fit for Ramirez-Rousseau, who has no problem swinging away from the setter.

A wide geographical spread has not quelled 16 Elite's cohesion on the club circuit. It might even be an advantage for snow-trodden treks like last weekend's jaunt to Minneapolis.
