These freshmen can handle pressure.

We have so many storylines and standouts to discuss from last weekend's Great Plains Region Bid Tournament. This stage often represents the final chance for squads to secure their spot in the GJNC field, allowing us to see which athletes elevate their game in prominent moments. Even freshman upstarts can rise to this challenge.

Nebraska's Class of 2029 has given us a whole encyclopedia of highlights this year, and we haven't even reached postseason play yet. Still, the GPR Bid Tournament had the “feel” of a high-stakes event with limited bids on offer.

Whether GJNC-bound or not, these 2029s brought maximum impact and effort against regional rivals.

Gangwish was one of the earliest additions to our 2029 radar after she appeared at last year's Prep Dig Freshman Showcase. Her top-performer status at the event just scratched the surface of what this Gretna standout can accomplish. Gangwish flourished on the right pin at the GPR Bid Tournament and punctuated Premier Nebraska 15 Black's undefeated run. Aside from her ability to put balls away, Gangwish's knack for wing blocking makes her an essential part of 15 Black's relentless defense.

15 Black gets its pin firepower on either side of the setter. Hansen is a fluid, rangy attacker who is ready-made for the L1 position. The Gretna East freshman puts a ton of momentum into her approach, even if she's tasked with taking first contacts from the front row. We've also watched Hansen grow as a six-rotation asset who can lock down the middle-back area. She did it all last weekend.

We've decided to triple down on the Premier Nebraska terminators, especially with the club sweeping the top two spots in the 15s race. Langan brought the hammer on the outside last weekend. Her fearless attitude, particularly in out-of-system situations, delivered clutch sideouts as Premier Nebraska 15 Red ascended to the title match. Scotus Central Catholic will lean on this underclassman again this fall.

Graham went above and beyond the call of duty as South Central NE 15 Black's featured defender. This talented libero was also the team's vocal leader throughout the event, guiding the team to several key wins en route to the podium. Graham's stability peaked as South Central NE won a dramatic three-set showdown in the tournament finale, cementing the Central City's freshman's spot on this feature.

South Central's 15s success wasn't solely engineered by its ball control gems. Hanzel anchored the operation in the middle and was among 15 Black's most efficient in-system attackers. We've been impressed by Hanzel's willingness to take various tempos in the middle and still find ways to score. She sees opposing hands well and has perfected her technique as a pin-to-pin blocker. Expect Hanzel and her group of rural Nebraska gems to make a little more noise in the Circle City.

Let's stay in the middle. Curry has thrived as a go-to weapon in Nebraska ONE 15 Black's first-ball offense. Her quick transition footwork keeps her a step ahead of opposing defenses, giving Curry plenty of seams to exploit along the net. Best of all, Nebraska ONE's 2029s have exhibited escalating confidence as the spring has progressed. Curry stepped up during 15 Black's bracket run at Show Me, and that trend continues.

Mahan is back in the spotlight again. Her quick, twitchy reactions have set the tone for VCNebraska 15 Black's stacked backcourt unit. Even when she's not taking care of transition digs, Mahan takes the lead as an out-of-system setter who can keep her pins in a groove. Last weekend was our best in-person look at VCN 15 Black, and Mahan's immediate impact was impossible to miss.

We've covered a wild late-season stretch for Premier Nebraska 15 Silver, which earned a runner-up finish at this month's Show Me Qualifier. Michaelis was a multi-position star in that effort, and her influence persisted on the Great Plains stage. She has the finesse and athleticism to be a setter-opposite hybrid in the 15 Silver lineup, giving Michaelis consistent opportunities to stand out. The Skutt Catholic freshman has capitalized.
