Qualifier success is all about stepping up when it matters most.

Premier Nebraska 16 Black has become fully acquainted with how unforgiving USAV qualifiers can be. The team roared to a 5-0 start at the Windy City Qualifier, earning a spot in 16 USA's final Gold bracket. However, the journey was cut short in the single-elimination opener after a brutal 28-26, 28-26 defeat.

Before that, we had the Mideast Qualifier. 16 Black swept through the opening round and established itself as a top contender in the division. However, despite finishing 2-1 in the second round, 16 Black lost out on a triple tiebreaker and dropped out of Gold contention heading into the event's final day.

Perhaps the third time would be the charm in Kansas City. Previous setbacks did not quell the energy that 16 Black and its supporters brought to last weekend's Show Me Qualifier. The result was ultimate retribution--even after familiar adversity crept back into the picture.

Premier Nebraska's 16s are about to infiltrate the Nebraska Bid Tracker.

Clutching Up

Premier Nebraska 16 Black's early Show Me success mirrored its prior qualifier trips.

Saturday's slate ended with a 3-0 mark in Hy-Vee Arena. 16 Black survived a three-set gauntlet with New Age and swept past its other two foes to reach Sunday's Bartle Hall festivities.

Day 2 brought some of 16 Black's best volleyball. Even as the pressure and level of competition escalated, Premier Nebraska exercised its dominance en route to another perfect round-robin run. Monday's Gold group beckoned, and 16 Black was 6-0.

But, of course, we had seen this movie before. Early success doesn't always translate to bids, especially as events suddenly pivot to single-elimination formats. 16 Black started bracket play off right with a straight-set win over MAVS 816.

16 USA brought four bids to the table in Kansas City, and Premier Nebraska was now in the final eight. One match stood between it and that elusive bid.

Unfortunately, the team encountered an all-too-familiar roadblock in its contest against Volt. 16 Black fell in a close quarterfinal contest, ending its stint in the Gold bracket.

But, just as USAV qualifiers can be unforgiving, they can also offer chances for redemption. Two of Show Me's four 16 USA semifinalists were previously qualified in the division, leaving two bids unclaimed. Our attention turned to the fifth-sixth bracket, and 16 Black had a new lifeline.

So, again, Premier Nebraska had one obstacle to clear to secure a bid. 16 Black would not come up short this time.

All of the season's heartbreaks were mended with a dominant performance against Integrity. Premier Nebraska polished off a spectacular sweep to finally secure its spot in the GJNC field.

16 Black has a roster built for mixing and matching lineups to find the hot hand. Dynamic teams like these are always fun to cover, and it makes these narratives more interesting, too.

This depth often lends itself to a 6-2 system, allowing [player_tooltip player_id='729394' first='Audrey' last='Galyen'] and [player_tooltip player_id='774635' first='Molly' last='McGreer'] to share setting duties in the starting rotation. 16 Black's setter duo has flourished in 2026 while providing a lot more than consistent second contacts. Galyen and McGreer also channel tremendous defensive skills in the right-back area and can carry a DS role if needed. Long rallies were the norm in Kansas City.

With two setters, we also have two opposites. This is where [player_tooltip player_id='575242' first='Sydney' last='Bartholet'] and [player_tooltip player_id='741552' first='Molly' last='Phillips'] have provided a new influx of firepower to the 16 Black frontcourt. Phillips joined the Premier Nebraska fray this winter and has harnessed her multi-position experience with 16 Black. Bartholet, meanwhile, has fully bounced back from injury to mount an exceptional comeback bid as one of her team's top pin attackers. This position is full of compelling storylines.

We get more of these redeeming stories on the other pin, too. 16 Black features a stacked three-headed monster with [player_tooltip player_id='573209' first='Jordan' last='Frink'], [player_tooltip player_id='774644' first='Grace' last='Scheef'], and [player_tooltip player_id='961178' first='Haley' last='Rands'] producing highlight moments in conjunction. Frink has become 16 Black's six-rotation anchor player who will readily go pass-to-attack in the frontcourt. Scheef is equally proficient in the ball control phase and is exceptional in Zone 6. As if that's not enough, 16 Black draws some strength from the Class of 2029 and allows Rands to weaponize her physicality against older competitors.

Physicality remains a prevailing theme in the middle. [player_tooltip player_id='774646' first='Bella' last='Mueller'] and [player_tooltip player_id='575223' first='Claire' last='Luthi'] are the go-to duo here. Mueller's positive block touches turned the tide for 16 Black's transition offense, allowing her and her teammates to amass impressive scoring runs. We were also struck by Luthi's growth as an agile, multi-talented middle blocker who can pounce on the ball before opposing blockers can square up.

Beethe

That leaves us with the backcourt unit led by [player_tooltip player_id='774642' first='Campbell' last='Hoeft'] and [player_tooltip player_id='572680' first='Brooklyn' last='Beethe']. Premier Nebraska has some enviable libero depth in the Class of 2028, and the emergence of Hoeft and Beethe is the perfect testament. Hoeft was a constant leveling force in Kansas City, guiding her fellow passers and closing off seams. She worked well in tandem with Beethe, whose willingness to anchor any zone makes her a persistent standout. Any of 16 Black's lineup permutations will heavily involve this DS pair.

Now, 16 Black has an ideal window to hone these combinations further in preparation for USAV Nationals. Thankfully, this group already knows how to perform under pressure.
