Many of those student-athletes were back at the blue oval this past weekend for the state meet </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The weather was optimal for breaking records and fans flocking to Drake Stadium. The three-day crowd was the third biggest in the event's history. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Here's a closer look at accomplished volleyballers that impacted the competition in their events at this year's Class 4A state track meet:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-Southeast Polk's Alayna Goldsberry finished second in the 100 meters, logging a time of 12.10 seconds. The junior ended up fifth in the 200, running a 24.86.  Julia Knapp, who led Des Moines Roosevelt in kills last year, was sixth in the 200 (25.07).</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-[player_tooltip player_id='490013' first='Logan' last='Vogt'], an elite all-state pick that led Waukee Northwest to a state volleyball title in the fall, took third place in the 400. The Iowa State volleyball commitment ran the race in 55.23. Her older sister, Avery Vogt, a Drake volleyball signee, was fourth (56.17). Ankeny Centennial's [player_tooltip player_id='498069' first='Kaelyn' last='Rinehart'] also reach state in the 400. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-Indianola's [player_tooltip player_id='493609' first='Madison' last='Grover'] ran the 400 hurdles in 1:02.78, which was good enough for a sixth-place finish. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-[player_tooltip player_id='763901' first='Berkley' last='Weiland'] ran on the Southeast Polk sprint medley relay team that finished fifth in 1:45.72. Brooklyn Brown anchored the Valley SMR to 11th place (1:48.12), and [player_tooltip player_id='831281' first='Cora' last='Shaw'] and [player_tooltip player_id='815861' first='Lila' last='Shaw'] helped Johnston end up 13th (1:49.24). </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-Avery Vogt was part of the Waukee Northwest distance medley relay that came in third (4:02.69). Grover helped Indianola's DMR take eighth (4:09.01), and Brown and Valley were ninth (4:10.86). Norwalk with [player_tooltip player_id='745251' first='Ava' last='Carlson'] was 17th. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-Goldsberry and Weiland were part of a 4x100 team that finished second, completing the race in 47.08. [player_tooltip player_id='831281' first='Cora' last='Shaw'] anchored a Dragon foursome that finished sixth (48.82). </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-Avery Vogt and [player_tooltip player_id='490013' first='Logan' last='Vogt'] were on a 4x200 that set the all-time Iowa record with a time of 1:37.77. Southeast Polk with Goldsberry and Weiland grabbed second (1:39.65), [player_tooltip player_id='752514' first='Brooklynn' last='Kelley'] helped Pleasant Valley get fourth (1:40.69), Brown and Valley were seventh (1:41.95), [player_tooltip player_id='831281' first='Cora' last='Shaw'] and [player_tooltip player_id='815861' first='Lila' last='Shaw'] ran for 18th-place Johnston. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-[player_tooltip player_id='752514' first='Brooklynn' last='Kelley'], Hanley Schmidt, Elise Kane and [player_tooltip player_id='490015' first='Mazie' last='Sweers'] handled three legs of Pleasant Valley's seventh-place shuttle hurdle relay team. Kane also qualified for state in the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and 4x400. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-Avery Vogt and [player_tooltip player_id='490013' first='Logan' last='Vogt'] came back to run on a 4x400 relay that also set an all-time Iowa mark. It finished in 3:45.32. Grover and Indianola took fifth (3:53.59), and [player_tooltip player_id='815861' first='Lila' last='Shaw'] and Johnston was seventh (3:57.10). </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-Unique Waukee Northwest athlete [player_tooltip player_id='812248' first='Cassidy' last='Danburg'], who also helped the Wolves volleyball team win a state title and the basketball squad to a runner-up finish, recorded a fourth-place finish in the discus. The junior tossed it 142 feet. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-The high jump was crowded with volleyballers. Cedar Falls freshman [player_tooltip player_id='781517' first='Hadassah' last='Smith'] and [player_tooltip player_id='493601' first='Piper' last='Ladwig'], a Waukee Northwest junior committed to Iowa State in volleyball, were among four players tied for third with leaps of 5 feet, 4 inches. They were joined in the Top 10 by Norwalk sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='560368' first='Elle' last='Hatlevig'], who finished ninth, and 10th-place Cambel Drapeau, a Creighton volleyball commitment. Ellie Muller (Dowling Catholic), Schmidt, [player_tooltip player_id='360642' first='Sophia' last='Austen'] (Iowa City West), [player_tooltip player_id='766068' first='Madison' last='Messerly'] (Dallas Center-Grimes) and Ava Groeteke (Dowling Catholic) also reached state in the event. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>-Volleyballers showed well in the long jump, too. [player_tooltip player_id='490011' first='Leah' last='Janulewicz'], a Drake volleyball commitment from Waukee Northwest, checked in seventh with a leap of 17-4.75, while Kelley have PV the 10th-place finisher (16-10.75).
