Summer has a way of accelerating development.

Athletes are asked to compete with new teammates, learn from different coaches, travel to unfamiliar gyms, and perform in some of the most competitive environments of the year. The setters who continue growing through those experiences often come out the other side with a clearer understanding of who they are and what they bring to a team.

The athletes featured below all described their game a little differently. Some take pride in creating one-on-one opportunities for hitters. Others thrive on leadership, defensive effort, or finding ways to become offensive threats themselves. What connects them is a growing sense of identity.

They know what they do well. They understand how they help their teams. And they are actively working on the parts of their game that will help them continue developing.

These are a few 2029 setters worth tracking this summer.

Elizabeth Lewis wants opposing blockers to think twice before leaving her alone at the net.

I love being an offensive setter. I want to be known as a threat at the net.

That mindset has helped shape her first season running a 5-1 offense. The transition brought new responsibilities, new decisions, and plenty of opportunities to learn. Every rotation now runs through her. Every hitter depends on her ability to create rhythm and opportunity.

What stands out is how much Elizabeth embraces that responsibility.

When matches become loud or momentum starts to shift, she doesn't talk about pressure. She talks about preparation.

I rely on the training and preparation I put in outside the gym. It helps keep me centered, confident, and patient under pressure.

The confidence she is building seems tied directly to experience. Running a 5-1 for the first time has challenged her as both a setter and a leader, but she repeatedly pointed to the support of her coaches and teammates as part of that growth.

This summer, Elizabeth is focused on becoming faster, stronger, and more consistent. After spending a season learning how to manage an offense, she appears eager to continue growing into the leadership role that comes with the position.

Diya Mathew pays attention to details that many players never notice.

A blocker leaning too far one direction. A gap opening in the defense.

A hitter with a favorable matchup. Her job is to process that information quickly and turn it into an opportunity.

A part of my game that is becoming an aspect of my identity right now is my decision making as a setter.

That awareness seems to drive much of how she approaches the position. While many setters focus on delivering a quality ball, Diya is thinking about how to create one-on-one opportunities and help her hitters score before the set ever leaves her hands.

The game never appears rushed for her.

Pressure situations don't faze me because I have trust in my training.

Her coaches have challenged her to become more dangerous offensively by producing more blocks and more setter dumps. Rather than shying away from that expectation, she has leaned into it by studying defenses, learning how opponents react, and finding ways to become a more complete offensive weapon.

This summer, Diya's focus extends beyond setting technique. She wants to become more explosive physically, continue developing a quicker release point, and learn more about the college programs that fit her goals both academically and athletically.

Malia Suzuki enjoys keeping blockers uncomfortable.

Her deceptive setting and defensive effort have become defining parts of her game because they force opponents to hesitate. When blockers hesitate, hitters find seams. When hitters find seams, offenses become harder to stop.

My scrappy defense and deceptive setting is helping my hitters get seams in the block and/or one blocker.

The way she talks about volleyball reveals someone who values the details. Controlled breathing. Focal points. Staying present.

When matches become chaotic, those habits help her slow the game down and continue making quality decisions.

One of the biggest areas of growth for Malia this season has been leadership. Her coaches challenged her to take a larger role within her team, and she responded by focusing less on herself and more on understanding what each teammate needs to succeed.

That challenge changed how she views leadership.

Not as something that sounds the same for everyone, but as something that requires learning how to communicate differently with different people.

As recruiting begins becoming more real, Malia is excited to continue building relationships and exploring opportunities while continuing to grow both as a setter and teammate.

Jocelyn Nading wants to impact the game above the net.

The Pipeline setter has spent much of the year focused on becoming more physical, more aggressive, and more capable of creating offensive pressure herself.

The physicality I bring to the table has really shifted the trajectory of my season.

That growth has shown up in several ways. She wants to be bigger at the net. She wants to attack more aggressively. She wants to run a faster offense that creates cleaner opportunities for hitters and forces blockers to make difficult choices.

What makes those goals interesting is how she balances aggression with trust.

When matches get uncomfortable, Jocelyn doesn't become cautious.

She trusts her training and welcomes the responsibility that comes with making decisions for her team.

Throughout her responses, Coach Uche's influence surfaced repeatedly. Jocelyn credits him for helping her become more disciplined with her blocking footwork while reinforcing the importance of defense regardless of position.

As she looks ahead, she is excited to continue competing with new athletes, building connections with unfamiliar hitters, and expanding the range of offensive situations she can successfully manage.

For Maren McBride, volleyball begins with relationships.

The biggest part of my volleyball identity is my connection on and off the court with my teammates.

That answer explains a lot about how she views the game.

The trust built during practices, team dinners, travel weekends, and everyday conversations eventually shows up on the court. It creates confidence. It creates communication. It creates a team willing to play for one another.

When matches become faster or more uncomfortable, Maren returns to something familiar. Five years of training. Five years of repetition. Five years of trusting the people who helped develop her game.

I have confidence that they have taught me well.

One challenge from her coaches centered around patience on defense. Maren naturally wants to attack every ball immediately, but learning to slow down, read situations, and remain composed has helped her become more effective against tips, down balls, and unpredictable plays.

This summer, she hopes to learn more about the college experience by attending camps and visiting campuses. Just as important, she wants to discover what excites her about a school beyond volleyball.

Sydney Rincon does not want defenses getting comfortable.

"The part of my game that's really starting to define me is my unpredictability."

She takes pride in keeping opponents guessing. One play she may attack. The next she may move the ball somewhere unexpected. The goal is not simply to run an offense. The goal is to create opportunities that would not exist if defenses knew what was coming.

That same mindset carries into how she interacts with teammates.

If a hitter misses an attack, Sydney wants to get them another opportunity. If someone becomes frustrated, she believes part of her role is helping them move forward and trust the next play.

Throughout her responses, leadership appeared less like a title and more like a daily responsibility.

Her coaches challenged her to become the same leader regardless of position, circumstance, or environment. Whether she is setting, playing right side, or supporting from the sideline, she wants teammates to experience the same consistency from her.

This summer is giving Sydney opportunities to visit college campuses, meet new coaches, and continue refining both her setting and defensive game. Just as importantly, it is helping her better understand what type of program feels like the right fit for her future.

🔥 Athletes

The setters featured here are beginning to develop something every great setter eventually needs: a clear identity.

Some are learning how to become offensive threats. Others are finding confidence in their decision-making, leadership, defensive effort, or ability to build trust with teammates.

Study this group closely. Notice how they talk about responsibility, composure, communication, and earning the trust of the hitters around them. The setters who continue separating themselves are often the ones who understand that their influence extends far beyond the next set.
