Communication. Consistency. Body language. Leadership. Decision-making. Coachability. The small details that often separate good players from great ones as the game gets faster.

Here is what a group of setters learned when they stepped into a faster gym and spent a day around college coaches.

Some athletes wait for opportunities. Ever since i have known, [player_tooltip player_id='770102' first='Jocelyn' last='Nading'], she tends to run toward them.

While many setters focus primarily on ball delivery and offensive organization, Jocelyn's responses repeatedly returned to physicality, aggressiveness, and the willingness to put herself in challenging situations.

That mindset surfaced during a defensive demonstration led by SMU's Coach Carissa. When volunteers were needed, Jocelyn immediately stepped forward. Not because she had to. Because she wanted to.

The moment reflected the same confidence that showed up throughout her camp experience. Whether it was being aggressive at the net, trusting her tempo, or applying coaching feedback, she consistently embraced opportunities to compete.

That willingness to step forward is often one of the qualities that separates athletes as recruiting opportunities begin to increase.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

One lesson stood above everything else for [player_tooltip player_id='761052' first='Tessa' last='Kim'].

The little things matter.

As the pace increased throughout the camp, Tessa felt her decision-making, tempo, and ability to create opportunities for hitters remained some of the strongest parts of her game. Even when passes drifted off the net, she focused on delivering hittable balls and helping her offense stay organized.

What stayed with her most, however, was how closely college coaches watched the details that rarely show up in a stat sheet.

Communication. Body language. Effort. Coachability.

The experience reinforced something many young athletes eventually discover: perfection is not the expectation. Consistency and response are.

One moment especially captured how Tessa views the setter position. After delivering a set to a former teammate who terminated the ball in front of a college coach she admired, Tessa found herself celebrating just as much as if she had earned the point herself.

The moment was a reminder that setters often create success long before they receive credit for it.

As she heads into a summer filled with camps, training, and recruiting opportunities, Tessa remains focused on becoming a more complete offensive leader while continuing to improve her defense and ability to create opportunities when plays break down.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Adaptability may be [player_tooltip player_id='526557' first='Sydney' last='Rincon']'s greatest strength.

Throughout the camp, she found herself working with different middle blockers, different attacking styles, and different tempos. Rather than forcing athletes into her system, she adjusted her delivery to fit the players around her.

That ability stood out.

Several conversations with college coaches reinforced what she already suspected. Great setters do far more than deliver accurate balls. They communicate. They lead. They keep teams in system when passes aren't perfect.

One piece of advice resonated particularly strongly.

The ability to set every position from anywhere within the ten-foot line.

That expectation reflects the reality of the next level, where adaptability often becomes just as important as technique.

Sydney left the camp encouraged by her ability to involve all of her hitters while also demonstrating versatility through serve receive and defensive opportunities. With Open Division Nationals, and a long list of college camps still ahead, she appears eager to continue learning how to impact the game in as many ways as possible.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='847656' first='Robin' last='Cunningham'] walked away with a deeper appreciation for how much the game evolves.

At younger ages, block touches and cover balls can sometimes feel like secondary skills. At higher levels, they become essential.

That realization was one of the biggest takeaways from her time around college coaches.

What also stood out was how quickly athletes from different clubs learned to trust one another. Despite spending most of the season competing against each other, players found themselves working together within hours.

One memory captured that perfectly.

Robin delivered a set to an outside hitter she normally faces as an opponent. The hitter terminated the ball, and for perhaps the first time, Robin found herself cheering for someone she usually spends weekends trying to stop.

Moments like that are part of what makes showcase environments unique.

The volleyball matters, but so do the relationships, perspectives, and lessons athletes carry forward long after the event ends.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='780377' first='Sloane' last='Banks'] confirmed something she already believed.

The faster the game gets, the more important communication becomes.

As the pace increased throughout the camp, she found herself leaning into the qualities she values most. Staying vocal. Staying connected. Staying composed.

Those habits helped her remain effective as both a setter and defender while navigating unfamiliar teammates and competitive situations.

What reinforced the experience even further was hearing college coaches echo the same message.

Leadership matters. Consistency matters.

The ability to respond after mistakes matters.

Athletic ability may get athletes noticed, but how they handle adversity often determines how long they stay on a coach's radar.

One rally in particular stood out. Even after a chaotic sequence unfolded, Sloane remained composed, communicated clearly, and made a decision that helped her side win the point.

For her, it felt like evidence that months of work on confidence, composure, and mental toughness are beginning to show up when it matters most.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

The biggest lesson Naima Tilivala-Lewis took away from the showcase was surprisingly simple.

The little things matter.

Fundamentals. Consistency. Attention to detail.

As the drills became more demanding, she found herself relying on those foundations more than anything else. Blocking and setting decisions became easier when the fundamentals remained strong.

One moment stood above the rest.

A long rally ended with a block, a skill she had spent considerable time developing and one that college coaches had been helping her refine throughout the day.

The timing felt rewarding.

Not because of the point itself, but because improvement had become visible.

With camps at USC, UCLA, CBU, CSUN, and Arizona still ahead, Naima heads into summer focused on becoming stronger, more explosive, and more complete while continuing to build consistency in her setting.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='568100' first='Michelina' last='Rossi']'s story is less about where she is and more about where she is working to get back to.

After stepping away from volleyball because of a neck and back injury, the showcase provided another opportunity to learn, compete, and continue rebuilding.

One theme appeared throughout her reflections. Coachability.

Whether receiving feedback from coaches or making technical adjustments, Michelina embraces the process of trying new things, even when mistakes happen along the way.

One adjustment immediately clicked.

Learning to use her core more efficiently while setting helped everything feel smoother and more natural.

Those moments matter, especially for athletes working through setbacks and searching for progress one step at a time.

With physical therapy, private training, and summer camps ahead, Michelina's focus remains exactly where it should be: continuing to get better every day.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Consistency was the lesson [player_tooltip player_id='784698' first='Esther' last='Lorraine'] kept returning to.

Not only consistency in her setting, but consistency in her mindset.

The college camp challenged athletes to move quickly from one rep to the next, and Esther found success when she focused on delivering hittable balls while refusing to let mistakes linger.

That ability to reset is an important skill for setters.

Every point presents a new decision.

Every rally requires a new solution.

One of her favorite moments came during setter butterfly drills, where passing and setting accuracy were tested simultaneously. The drill reinforced her desire to continue improving her consistency, especially when working farther off the net.

As she continues developing, Esther's goals are clear: become more reliable, expand her defensive range, and continue pursuing every ball she can reach.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

If You Enjoyed This Article, Help Us Keep the Momentum Going

🔥 Athletes

The setters featured here all walked into the college camp hoping to improve their game.
