It's earned through consistency, communication, decision-making, and the ability to respond when momentum shifts. Coaches notice the athletes who stay composed after an error, encourage teammates through difficult stretches, embrace coaching, and continue making quality decisions when the match gets tight. Those qualities often become just as valuable as the points they score.

Following the USAV GJNC Showcase, I asked several pin hitters what they wanted teammates and coaches to count on when pressure increased, what they hoped college coaches would remember after watching them compete, and what they believed separated their game from others their age. Their responses revealed a group of athletes who understand that becoming a trusted player requires much more than physical talent.

The athletes featured below all define trust differently. Some earn it through relentless effort. Others through leadership, communication, composure, or consistency. Together, they offer a reminder that while talent may create opportunities, trust is earned one point, one decision, and one teammate at a time.

Aubriana Bumpass wants to be the player her teammates look toward when the match becomes uncomfortable. While she takes pride in her athleticism and offensive ability, she believes trust is earned through consistency, communication, and the confidence to keep competing regardless of the score. She wants every teammate to know they can depend on her to bring positive energy and steady leadership, especially when momentum begins to shift.

That mindset has also influenced the areas she's working to improve. Rather than focusing on one isolated skill, Bumpass is committed to becoming a more complete player who contributes in every rotation and continues making smart decisions under pressure. More than any individual statistic, she hopes coaches remember an athlete who competed with purpose, encouraged those around her, and never allowed adversity to change the way she led her team.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Finley Weikle believes trust starts long before the final points of a match. It is built through preparation, consistency, and showing teammates the same level of effort on every rally. She wants to be known as a player who stays composed under pressure while continuing to make confident decisions, regardless of whether the previous point ended in success or disappointment.

As her game continues to evolve, Weikle is intentionally refining the details that help her become more dependable in every situation. She understands that coaches value athletes who respond well to feedback, communicate clearly, and remain emotionally steady when matches tighten. That combination of discipline and composure reflects a player working to become someone her team can rely on from the opening serve to match point.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Julia Ferguson approaches leadership with a simple philosophy: make the next play and help everyone else do the same. She wants teammates to know they can count on her to stay positive, communicate consistently, and compete with confidence no matter what the scoreboard says. Rather than allowing mistakes to linger, Ferguson believes the best teams move forward together, and she works to be one of the athletes who helps create that mindset.

That perspective carries into the way she hopes coaches evaluate her. Beyond her offensive contributions, Ferguson wants to be remembered as someone who brings stability to the court through effort, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her teammates. Those qualities continue shaping a competitor who understands that trust is earned through daily habits just as much as match-day performance.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Audrey Simon is building her game around reliability. She believes teammates should never have to wonder what they're going to get from her when pressure increases. Whether she's attacking, passing, or defending, her goal is to bring the same level of focus, energy, and competitiveness from the first point of the match to the last.

She's also intentional about the way she responds to coaching and adversity. Every adjustment becomes another opportunity to improve, and every challenging moment becomes a chance to reinforce her confidence instead of losing it. Simon hopes college coaches leave remembering an athlete who competes with consistency, communicates with purpose, and values doing the little things that help teams win. Those habits continue laying the foundation for a player coaches can trust in every phase of the game.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Whitney doesn't shy away from pressure. She welcomes it. Foote wants teammates and coaches to know they can put the ball in her hands when the score tightens because she trusts herself to take a confident swing instead of playing cautiously. That mindset is backed by relentless preparation, as she's investing extra time in explosive training, weightlifting, garage reps, and additional work with her coaches to create faster, more efficient contact at the net.

What makes Foote's perspective unique is that her competitiveness never comes at the expense of her teammates. She wants to be remembered just as much for celebrating a teammate's success as she is for delivering a key kill. Having experienced what it's feels like to compete without consistent encouragement, she has made it a priority to become the first voice offering support after a mistake and the loudest one celebrating the next great play. That combination of confidence, resilience, and genuine care for the people around her continues shaping the type of pin hitter coaches love building programs around.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Olivia Petersen is working toward becoming the type of pin hitter who impacts every phase of the game. While she enjoys attacking aggressively, she believes her value comes from being a complete player who can pass, defend, lead, and still demand the ball in the biggest moments. Rather than separating offense from defense, Petersen sees both as essential parts of earning her team's trust, which is why improving serve receive, defensive quickness, and explosiveness remain priorities in her development.

Olivia's competitive mindset: "I have a short memory." Mistakes don't linger. The next rally immediately becomes her focus. That ability to reset allows her to continue leading with confidence while bringing consistent energy to the court. Surrounded by a family with a rich collegiate athletic background, Petersen is motivated to continue that tradition, but she's determined to earn that opportunity by becoming the reliable, all-around teammate coaches can depend on in every situation.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Bella McNaughton has built her identity around becoming a complete volleyball player rather than simply a productive attacker. She believes her all-around game, competitive mindset, and willingness to outwork others separate her from many athletes her age. Whether she's attacking, defending, or contributing in serve receive, her goal is to influence the match in every rotation while continuing to expand her physical tools through increased explosiveness, strength, and vertical jump training.

For McNaughton, earning trust begins with consistency. She wants teammates to know they'll get relentless effort, positive energy, and someone willing to take responsibility in key moments regardless of the score. One quality stands out above the rest: coachability. She welcomes feedback and takes pride in applying it immediately, believing improvement happens through action rather than intention. Those habits continue laying the foundation for a player who values growth as much as performance.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Madeleine Gibson understands that reliability isn't about forcing difficult plays. It's about making smart ones. As a left-handed pin hitter, she already brings a unique offensive look, but what continues expanding her game is her ability to adapt to imperfect sets and stay productive when plays break down. She's intentionally working on tooling opposing blocks and using sharp cross-court attacks to force defenses out of system, recognizing that creating opportunities for her team is just as valuable as recording the kill herself.

Pressure doesn't change the way Gibson competes. She wants teammates and coaches to count on her to keep swinging confidently, make intelligent decisions, and bring even more energy when the match is on the line. Just as importantly, she hopes coaches remember how quickly she moves past mistakes while lifting the confidence of everyone around her. That same entrepreneurial mindset she applies to running her own businesses and supporting her local animal shelter reflects an athlete who enjoys creating, serving others, and finding solutions both on and off the court.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Mia Mathis has no interest in being known as a front-row specialist. She wants to be the athlete coaches trust in every rotation. While her power and vertical naturally create offensive opportunities, Mathis believes her greatest value comes from contributing in serve receive, defense, out-of-system situations, and the pressure moments that often determine the outcome of close matches. Her goal is to become the complete player every team can rely on, regardless of where she is on the court.

That mindset continues shaping the areas she's working to improve. Mathis is refining her consistency as a hitter by contacting the ball at its highest point while adding more shot variety instead of relying solely on power. She's also developing a more controlled, aggressive serve that creates pressure without sacrificing consistency. A standout hurdler ranked among Indiana's best, Mathis credits track with strengthening her explosiveness, discipline, and competitive mindset. Those qualities continue reinforcing the dependable presence she strives to become every time she steps on the court.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Abigail Schimmel understands that earning a coach's trust begins with consistency. She takes pride in being the same competitor every day, bringing a positive attitude, embracing feedback, and staying committed to the process of improving. Rather than chasing quick results, Schimmel enjoys the work that happens between matches, believing coachability is one of the qualities that continues separating athletes over time.

Her focus now is expanding her offensive game by developing more powerful attacks while adding greater shot confidence. Even as those skills continue to grow, her priorities remain unchanged. She wants teammates to count on her to compete for the next point, keep rallies alive, and maintain the type of mindset that encourages everyone around her to keep working. Coaches often appreciate athletes who love being coached as much as they love competing, and Schimmel's approach reflects that perspective.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Tobi McFall believes trust begins with communication. She understands that strong connections with her setter create opportunities to attack different routes, use a variety of angles, and make smarter offensive decisions throughout a match. That willingness to communicate has become a defining part of her game, allowing her to contribute beyond simply finishing points.

McFall is equally intentional about becoming a more complete player by developing her setting skills, believing versatility only strengthens her value on the court. When matches become tight, she wants teammates to remember her calm demeanor, positive attitude, and ability to make smart plays under pressure. Growing up in a town of just 200 people, volleyball has always been part of her life. She jokes that her earliest memories include napping in ball carts while her mother coached, a reminder that her passion for the game began long before she ever became a pin hitter herself.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

If You Enjoyed This Article, Help Us Keep the Momentum Going

🔥 Athletes

The athletes featured here talked about staying composed after mistakes, communicating with teammates, embracing pressure, encouraging others, and continuing to make smart decisions when the score gets tight.
