The path to competitive volleyball doesn't always run through a traditional high school program. That was evident at Homeschool Nationals, where athletes from across the country came together to compete, showcase their abilities, and represent programs built around a different approach to school and sport. Watching these teams compete firsthand, one thing was clear: a nontraditional path to volleyball doesn't mean a lack of talent, competitiveness, or potential. Several athletes turned in performances worthy of a closer look, and many are headed off to play at the next level.

January is an intriguing prospect with plenty of upside, particularly at the net. Tall and long, she has the physical tools to become an impactful blocker, and her lateral movement allows her to cover ground effectively along the net. She also brings an impressive level of confidence and court presence for an underclassman. Offensively, January was highly efficient, making very few unforced errors while consistently finding ways to put the ball away. She was blocked just once, even when playing against D1 level talent, a testament to her ability to terminate without giving away unnecessary points. With her length, mobility, and composure, January has plenty of potential to continue developing into an impactful front-row presence and a for sure next level player.

Small in stature but mighty in presence, Taylor was one of the more memorable freshmen I watched at Homeschool Nationals. At 5'4", I actually had to double-check her listed height because her play and the confidence with which she carried herself suggested a much taller, more experienced athlete. A six-rotation player, Taylor stood out just as much for her defensive contributions and passing as she did at the net. She attacked fearlessly, taking aggressive swings without hesitation, then brought that same relentless energy to the back row. Her all-out approach to the game, combined with the maturity she displayed as a freshman, made her particularly impressive. Taylor is a player whose presence extends well beyond her physical stature.

It was easy to see why Lafferty has earned the opportunity to continue her career at Harding University. A powerful outside hitter, she brings a heavy arm and the ability to score from multiple areas of the court. She has the full arsenal of shots expected from an effective pin attacker, including a heavy cross-court swing, a deep line shot, and the awareness to use off-speed shots when the situation calls for it. At the net, Lafferty is a strong left-side blocker, particularly against the opponent's first- and second-tempo attacks. Developing her slide-blocking technique will be an important next step as she transitions to the next level. She also brings pressure from the service line with an aggressive serve that can disrupt an opponent's offense. As a senior, Lafferty pairs her physical presence with confident court leadership, making her a valuable presence on both sides of the ball.

Ripley was one of the tallest athletes at Homeschool Nationals, and she knows how to use every bit of her height and length on both sides of the ball. She commands attention as a blocker, using her presence at the net to disrupt opposing hitters and force them into uncomfortable decisions, often resulting in off-speed shots or unforced errors. Offensively, Ripley does an excellent job of transitioning and working to get up for the next attack, and her ability to stay involved in the play translates into efficient scoring opportunities. Beyond her physical tools, Ripley brings the qualities of a strong senior leader. She is vocal, isn't afraid to ask for the ball in pressure situations, and competes relentlessly regardless of the score. That mentality was on full display when her team faced a 24-18 deficit and rallied to win the set, with Ripley playing a significant role in the comeback. Her combination of size, persistence, and composure in high-pressure moments makes her a difficult player to overlook.

Smith was arguably the heaviest-hitting middle I watched throughout the weekend, and she showed the offensive skill set of a true M1 at the next level. She attacked the 1, 3, 6, and slide with impressive efficiency, hitting over .400 against high-level competition throughout the tournament. Her quickness in transition allows her to get available for multiple attacking opportunities, and her sharp-angle 3 ball is one of the most impressive offensive weapons in her arsenal. Defensively, Smith came up with key blocks at crucial moments, particularly against opposing middles running the 1 and powerful outside hitters attacking from the 4. She consistently delivered what her team needed at the net and from the service line while shouldering a significant share of the team's workload. Her combination of offensive range, transition speed, and ability to close down opposing attackers makes her a strong candidate for the M1 position at the next level.

Homeschool volleyball may offer a different path to the game, but the talent, competitiveness, and ambition on display at Nationals made it clear that these athletes are every bit as deserving of recognition. From underclassmen already showing tremendous potential to seniors preparing to take their careers to the collegiate level, the weekend offered a glimpse of the depth of talent developing outside the traditional high school system. If these performances are any indication, homeschool volleyball is a part of the game worth paying attention to.
