The high school volleyball season officially got underway last week. The journey to crowing state champions during early November in Coralville began in earnest.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>While teams will decide it on the court, predicting who they will be is a fun exercise, for me, and, hopefully, you. We love rankings!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I'll be ranking teams in the state's second largest class, 4A, each Monday (or Tuesday) throughout the season. Here's how I see it two weeks into the new campaign:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>1. Sioux Center</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Warriors remain in the top spot despite having three losses. One of them (Hinton) is against an Iowa team. The other two were at the hands of Sioux Falls (SD) Christian. Sioux Center challenges itself against a tough schedule, which is why it climbed all the way to the Class 4A state title match last year. [player_tooltip player_id='816843' first='Maryn' last='Franken']<a href="https://prepdig.com/player/maryn-franken/"></a> has collected 77 kills (.275) in 20 sets to go with 48 digs and 15.0 blocks so far this year. [player_tooltip player_id='841522' first='Adison' last='Brantsen']<strong><a href="https://prepdig.com/player/adison-brantsen/"></a> </strong>added 36 kills and picked up a team-best 53 digs. Jorgia VanDeBerg and Stella Hietbrink combined for 51 kills.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>2. Marion</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Wolves moved up one spot on the strength of straight-set wins against Class 5A Iowa City West and Waterloo United last week. They also own victories against Ames, Johnston, Davenport North and Johnston. [player_tooltip player_id='759977' first='Abbey' last='Kirk']<a href="https://prepdig.com/player/abbey-kirk/"></a> leads the charge with 66 kills (.291) in 21 sets and ranks second in digs (64). [player_tooltip player_id='758819' first='Nayomi' last='Vasser'], [player_tooltip player_id='1017878' first='Kaylene' last='Cordes']<a href="https://prepdig.com/player/kaylene-cordes/"></a>, Hayden Dietz and Alysin Kinney each has between 27 and 34 kills, and [player_tooltip player_id='693817' first='Jaleaya' last='Oliver'] has come up with a team-best 86 digs.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>3. Norwalk</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Norwalk bounced back from three losses in Week 1 to move up one place in these rankings. The Warriors swept through the ADM Tournament with a 10-0 set record. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='560368' first='Elle' last='Hatlevig'], a Michigan State commitment, has torn up the competition to the tune of 140 kills (.397) in 24 sets. Senior setter [player_tooltip player_id='493974' first='Hadley' last='Michael']<a href="https://prepdig.com/player/hadley-michael-3/"></a> also has been excellent with team-highs in assists (217) and blocks (20.0), while ranking second in digs (48). Embry Dupont, [player_tooltip player_id='758781' first='Myla' last='Brown']<a href="https://prepdig.com/player/myla-brown/"></a> and [player_tooltip player_id='730403' first='Delaynee' last='Steele'] have teamed up for 99 kills, and [player_tooltip player_id='809159' first='Reese' last='Heim'] 57 digs.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>4. Assumption</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Knights move up a spot to No. 4 despite dropping a 2-1 decision to Dike-New Hartford at last week's Mount Vernon Tournament. Their resume includes victories against Ankeny Centennial, North Scott, Sioux City East and Pella. The others have happened against defending 5A champ Waukee Northwest, and by 2-1 scores against Valley and Ankeny, 5A semifinalists last year. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='694203' first='Belle' last='Cotton']<a href="https://prepdig.com/player/belle-cotton/"></a> has hammered out 83 kills (.290) and added 49 digs in 25 sets. Freshmen [player_tooltip player_id='877691' first='Piper' last='Peterson']<a href="https://prepdig.com/player/piper-peterson/"></a> and [player_tooltip player_id='918791' first='Zoe' last='Cinadr'] have combined for 87 kills, while [player_tooltip player_id='1037650' first='Taylor' last='Camarena'] has 27 with 20.0 blocks. [player_tooltip player_id='742600' first='Piper' last='Hodge']<a href="https://prepdig.com/player/piper-hodge/"></a> has piled up 116 digs.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>5. Clear Creek Amana</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Clippers lone loss this season came in Week 1 against a really good Solon team in what amounted to the Grinnell Tournament title match. Their 10 wins include sweeping through the Anamosa Tournament last week with a 10-0 set record. [player_tooltip player_id='516002' first='Julia' last='Schlarbaum'] and [player_tooltip player_id='493660' first='Bailey' last='Simpson'] have teamed up for 200 kills while standing out though six rotations in 2025 sets this season.
